J2FC Round 2
Caulry 3-12
Loughnavalley 4-11
Caulry and Loughnavalley served up an entertaining encounter on Friday evening last when the sides met for this Round 2 clash on the J2FC in Kilbeggan.
The opposition hit the ground running as they opened the scoring account with 1-1 in quick succession. Two points from the boot of Liam Malynn reduced the gap to two by the 14th minute. A fabulous passing move through Olan Healy and Brendan McCormack saw Darren Browne deliver our first goal of the game. This was followed up by points from Malynn and Hugh Allen to overturn the scoreline and put Caulry three points the good. However, this lead was short-lived as Loughnavalley found a pocket in our defence and riffled the back of the net after taking a short free. The opposition then briefly took the lead with two quick scores. However, Browne had his say before the half-time whistle when he fired home another goal to give our lads a minimal lead at the break.
Two missed Caulry chances preceded the opening score of the second half. This coming in the form of a Loughnavalley goal after their forward got the better of Conor Hynes at the second time of asking. A point from Alan Lynam then steady the Caulry ship somewhat. The sides shared four points between the 38th and 42nd minutes with Alan Daly and Adam Donoghue on target for Caulry. Donoghue then struck lucky at the end of the third quarter as he rattled the back of the net to put our lads in front. Loughnavalley pointed a free moments later to keep in touching distance. The Caulry lads worked tirelessly throughout the game as they overturned the ball and Harry Hughes finished this move with a point. Despite this score, our lads failed to put Loughnavalley to bed as a couple of unanswered scores levelled the game going into the final ten minutes. During this period, both sides’ desire for a win was on show as they exchanged points on a tit-for-tat basis. However, Loughnavalley got the edge on the 59th minute when a free-kick dropped into the back of our net. They then followed up this goal with a point to widen the gap to four. Our lads dug deep in the closing minutes of the game but two points from Malynn proved worthless as the opposition took the win.

SFC Round 2
Caulry 1-15
Tyrrellspass 1-12
Our seniors got their first championship win when they overcame a Tyrrellspass threat in Hogan Park on a sunny Saturday afternoon last.
For long spells of the opening half, Caulry were on the back foot, consistently levelling Tyrrellspass’ margin. The opposition kicked a fine point within 25 seconds of the throw-in to take an early lead before Senan Baker put Caulry’s first score on the scoreboard with a converted-free. Tyrrellpass managed to stretch their lead to two for the first and only time by the 8th minute. These scores came in the form of a pointed-free and point from play after the opposition made the most of a mis-pass in our attack. The game was levelled though for the second time courtesy of pointed-frees from Baker (on both occasions as a result of needless fouls). In customary fashion, the men in blue and navy went ahead again by one. But true to form, Caulry levelled the ball after Paddy Sleator found Damien Dolan who made no mistake in splitting the uprights. The teams traded another duo of scores with Tadgh Baker adding after a good sequence of play through Sleator, Tiarnán O’Donovan and Senan. Our lads then took the lead for the first time in the game on the 23rd minute when Baker rattled the back of the Tyrrellpass net after his initial effort was stopped. This proved to be the difference between the sides as although Tyrrellpass cut the deficit somewhat, our lads never let the lead slip completely. The opposition responded well with a point on the 26th minute, however Stephen Connolly sent over the final score of the half to reinstate our three-point advantage at the interval.
Caulry hit the ground running in the second half with Sleator stretching the lead to four. Tyrrellspass then got going with a converted-free after three minutes of play, but our tails were up as we accounted for the next three scores of the game. Baker worked wonders as he managed to get the better of three or four Tyrrellspass defenders and bisected the uprights on the 33rd minute. O’Donovan, who impressed throughout, then added a fine score from play before he pointed from a mark on the 40th minute. To credit Tyrrellspass, they kept their composure and a trio of points later had reduced the gap back to three heading into the final quarter. Tadgh Baker added his second score on the 54th minute. Jack Connaughton was then put under pressure as he managed to diffuse a lingering Tyrrellspass threat. Conor McCormack, who was a welcomed introduction from our bench, sent over a free from outside the ‘45’ on the 26th minute and a further score from Colin Murphy had the gap widened to six once again. However, Tyrrellpass were in control of their kickout and they used this to their advantage as the ball was worked down the field and into the back of the Caulry net. With pressure on, McCormack stood up as he sent over two fabulous points either side of Tyrrellspass’ scores to ensure Caulry ran out winners on the evening.
