Our ladies came out on top when they made the journey to Loughnavalley on Thursday evening last for their second game of this year’s IFC.

Loughnavalley were quick off the mark and went two points ahead from the offset. A converted free by Leah Quigley got our girls off the mark after nine minutes before Megan Clinton kicked over the equalising point. It was our turn to go ahead then as Quigley converted another free. The homeside briefly drew level before a trio of Caulry points put our girls in front: Quigley tapped over another free before two points from play from Lauren Claffey (Anna Malone intercepting the ball in our defence to set up this attack) and Quigley (Aishling Gaynor and Jasmine Maloney combining under the kickout for this score). Before the break, the homeside tapped over two frees to lead by the narrowest of margins.

Scores were slow to come by in the early stages of the second half with just two points being exchanged in the opening ten minutes (Clinton the scorer for Caulry). A trio of unanswered Caulry scores between the 52nd and 53rd minutes extended our lead then: Quigley with another free before Karrissa Burns kicked two fine points from play. Our defence done well throughout the second half as they never buckled under the pressure of Loughnavalley. A point from Kate Stuart Trainor on the 58th minute gave our girls a comfortable five point lead. During injury time, the home side managed to secure two late points, but ultimately, our girls had done enough to get over the line on this occasion.

Caulry 1-12

Garrycastle 2-10

Our seniors came up short in the final hour when they battled it out against our neighbours Garrycastle in Páirc Chiaráin on Friday evening last for Round 2 of this year’s SFC.

Garrycastle burst out of the tracks and had to settle for a point inside the opening 60 seconds of play after Jack Connaughton denied their corner forward a goal. Brian Doyle levelled the game then up the other end of the field. The next three scores of the game all came from placed-balls: the opposition added a ‘45’ and a free before Kevin Maguire converted a free for Caulry. Garrycastle weren’t to be bested at the second time of asking when they raised the game’s first green flag after twelve minutes. This score was quickly clawed back though as a two-point free by Connaughton and point from play by Tiarnán O’Donovan kept Caulry in touching distance. In the last ten minutes of the half, Garrycastle added 0-3 to our 0-1 to lead by three at the break (Colin Murphy was the Caulry man on target).

The men in green and red restarted the second half in similar fashion to the first as they added a quick point from play. Within the space of a couple of minutes, the teams were back level after a duo of orange flags for Caulry: Connaughton added a free while Stephen Connolly kicked a fine score from play after O’Donovan pounced on the opposition’s kickout. Our lads owned much of the possession then but will rue their missed chances as the sides exchanged just one point a piece before the end of the third quarter. On the 53rd minute, it looked as though Lady Luck might be on our side as Doyle rattled the back of the Garrycastle net after a good stride forward by Sean Murphy. This put us three points the good and in the lead for the first time in the game. Garrycastle responded well as a converted free kept them within touching distance of the lead. A couple of missed chances fell astray for the men in green and red then before the all-important score came on the 59th minute when their no. 12 tore forward and sent a bullet high into the back of the Caulry net. Now with our backs against the wall, the Caulry lads showed good composure as Oisín Shortall equalised with two minutes of injury time already on the clock. Just as supporters might have settled for a draw, Garrycastle were handed a lifeline as an intercepted Caulry attack was worked down the field and tapped over the bar to ensure the opposition snuck away with a narrow win.

Garrycastle 1-9

Caulry and Garrycastle had to settle for a share of the spoils when the sides met in Garrycastle in Round 2 of the J2FC on Sunday morning last.

Adam Donoghue kickstarted proceedings when he opened with a point from play. Garrycastle went ahead then with a goal after three minutes. Points from Donoghue and Liam Malynn (a free) levelled the game then. Our lads went ahead courtesy of scores from Aaron Murphy (a point) and Cian Malone (a goal after he got on the end of a ball in by Donoghue). A trio of unanswered Garrycastle points brought the deficit back to one at the halftime whistle.

The homeside went ahead almost immediately after the restart when they added two points from play. It took until the 42nd minute for our lads to get going again, this score coming from Dean Burns. Further points from Murphy and Malynn put two points between the sides. This scoreline was turned on its head after a trio of Garrycastle points including a two-pointer between the 59th and 61st minutes. Our lads dug deep in injury time as a point from David Gaynor left one between the sides. Malynn then levelled the game from a free after Garrycastle breached the three up rule. A few more plays transpired but ultimately, the game finished as a draw.
