Girls U16 Championship Round 1
Caulry 5-8
Ballycomoyle 5-8
There was nothing to separate the sides when Caulry and Ballycomoyle U16 girls met in the park on Tuesday evening last for the opening game of the championship.
Within the opening minute of the game, two goals were conceded up either end of the field: Kate Corcoran opened the scoring straight from the throw in before the opposition did similar up their end of the field. Chloe Doyle kicked the first point of the game after eight minutes. A point from Corcoran preceded the opposition’s second goal of the game which came on the 17th minute. The sides traded points then before Lexi Grady booted home a goal for us to give us back the lead. A smattering of scores were produced in the remaining ten minutes of the half as Doyle and Eimear Allen both were on target for Caulry.
Within 60 seconds of the restart, the sides were back level as Cara Winters and Kelly Lynam both added Caulry points. Winters was on fire during these opening minutes as two more points from her saw our girls take the lead once again. Grady added her second goal to stretch our lead. Ballycomoyle were unlucky on the 47th minute as two goal chances rattled back off the post before a penalty kick was booted over the bar for a point. Despite this, it seemed to resurge their spirit as the opposition saw out the half with an unanswered 1-3 to come away with the draw.

Division 4 ACFL Final
Caulry 3-16
St. Joseph’s 3-18
Extra time was needed to decipher the result of the Division 4 ACFL final when the sides met in Cusack Park on Wednesday evening last.
St. Joseph’s opened the scoring account in style when their full forward booted home a goal after just two minutes of play. St. Joseph’s second attack then fell short as this ball was worked down the field and finished to the back of the net by Brian Doyle (David Gaynor and Oisín Shortall contributing to their score). St. Joseph’s momentarily went ahead again with a point from play before Shortall tied things up on the 9th minute with a similar point. It was our turn to take the lead then when John Maguire hit the back of the net after outfield work by Doyle. Two converted placed balls (one a free and one a ‘45’) gave our lads a five-point advantage then. A duo of scores for the opposition (a goal despite the best efforts of Cillian Nagle and Gaynor) and a point brought the margins back to one. The sides traded six points on the trot then (Malynn with two frees and Olan Healy with a mark). Gaynor fisted over a late point to see our lads lead by the narrowest of margins at the break.
The sides were evenly matched throughout the second half as Malynn restarted the scoring with a point from play. A duo of St. Joseph’s points had the sides back on level ground by the 37th minute. Scores from Doyle and Malynn momentarily put our lads two points in front, but St. Joseph’s always kept in touching distance taking their chances up the other end of the field. Malynn reinstated our two-point lead when he raised an orange flag on the 50th minute. However, St. Joseph’s weren’t going down without a fight as their no. 14 waltzed through our defence and riffled the back of the Caulry net, giving his team the lead for the first time in this period. Another St. Joseph’s score put our lads on the back foot with two points now between the sides. With our backs against the wall, our lads had to dig deep and this is what they did as Doyle booted home as goal on the 56th minute to once again turn the scoreline on its head (Eoin Fox and Darren Hynds being key stakeholders in this set up). St. Joseph’s almost immediately drew level again before Hynds travelled from the backline and sent over a point of his own. Deep into injury time, the referee awarded St. Joseph’s a free as their free taker dutifully converted, sending the game to extra time.
St. Joseph’s started the first period of extra time with a numerical advantage as a late black card meant Cormac Murphy (who excelled throughout the game) was forced to be a spectator for almost the entirety of this passage. The opposition made the most of this as they added four unanswered points on the trot, one of which a two pointer, to lead by five. This could have been more had if not been for an absolutely insane block from Ciaran Gaynor who denied St. Joseph’s a goal on the 5th minute. Once the teams were back with equal numbers though, our true form returned with scores from Thomas Dunning and Healy reducing the gap to three at the short interlude.
Only one score was produced in the second period as both defences excelled: Malynn converted a free after nine minutes to bring the gap back to two. Murphy was the man who took the last shot and had Lady Luck been on our side, this ball would of ended up inside the back of the net, but credit must be given to the opposition who managed to clear the threat and claimed the victory after an outstanding 80 minutes of football. Despite the result, our lads still secure their promotion to Division 3 ACFL for next year. They put in an absolutely astonishing display and deservedly earn a well needed rest before starting their championship campaign next month. Well done to the lads and their management team.

Ladies Division 2 League Round 6
Caulry 7-15
Loughnavalley 2-5
Our ladies had a comprehensive win over Loughnavalley when they hosted the side in the park on a glorious Sunday morning last.
Loughnavalley were first off the mark with a point from play. Our girls weren’t long about getting going though as a goal from Karrissa Burns launched us into a lead we would never relinquish. Points from Molly Connaughton (two from play), Rachel Maguire and Leah Quigley preceded the opposition’s second point of the game. Despite the best efforts of Loughnavalley, our girls were stronger throughout as a myriad of scores from Jasmine Maloney, Aoife Collins, Quigley and Maloney helped our girls to a healthy lead at the break.
Caulry added 1-2 to the scoreline before Loughnavalley got motoring again in the second half, this a point from play after thirty seven minutes. Further scores from Eunice David, Quigley, Maloney, Burns and Connaughton widened the gap between the sides. The visitors came back somewhat in the later stages of the game but ultimately, our girls were too strong for the Loughnavalley side on this occasion.
