U14 League Round 4
Our U14 boys were defeated by a strong Killucan side when they hosted the yellow bellies in the park on Wednesday evening last.
Killucan were dominant throughout the game and cruised into an early lead with a myriad of scores from play. Cillian Moran got Caulry off the mark in style when he rattled the back of the Killucan net after a free kick from Adam Ledwith dropped short. Ledwith added a point himself then before the break
Our boys fought back well in the second half with a stream of points from Gavin Hennessy (Ryan McCormack and Noah Picard setting up this score), Charlie Buckley and Moran. However, Killucan always kept the scoreboard ticking over with points up their end of the field. Ledwith was the last player to contribute to the scoreline with a point from play as ultimately, the opposition proved too strong for our boys on this occasion.
Team: Rory Hasson, Oisín Murphy, Joe Walsh, Conor McCarthy, Gavin Hennessy, Sean Maguire, Dara Quilty, Charlie Buckley, Aengus Baker, Reuben Bucys McLaughlin, Adam Ledwith, Senan Brady, Ryan McCormack, Cillian Moran, Tadgh O’Faolain, Noah Picard

Division 1 ACFL Round 8
Caulry 1-15
Athlone 1-9
Our seniors picked up a win when they made the short journey to Páirc Chiaráin on Friday evening last.
The sides were evenly matched throughout the opening ten minutes as they shared four points: Shane Lawless and Luke Buckley were on target for us as Athlone narrowly went ahead courtesy of a two-pointer on the 6th minute. A converted-free by Buckley tied up the game. The sides traded points then (Donoghue on target for us after a good patient move via Buckley and Kevin Maguire). Our lads took the lead on the 14th minute when Tiarnán O’Donovan finished with a goal (Glenn Carolan instigating this move from a turnover down the field). The home side managed to get back to within a point with a duo of scores, but our lads saw out the half well with a smattering of points from O’Donovan (two from play), Brian Doyle, Oisín Shortall and Kevin Maguire (a free). This gave Caulry a six-point advantage at the break.
The rate of scores slowed significantly throughout the second half. The third quarter saw just two successful conversions, both from the boot of Shortall. Another pointed-free from Buckley extended our lead to nine before Athlone restarted their scoring on the 49th minute (Shane Lawless getting a vital touch on this to send the ball over the bar). Buckley and Brian Doyle kicked points either side of a converted free for the home side. Athlone struck lucky on the 59th minute when they made the most of a wayward kickout and drove the ball into the back of the net. Before the fulltime whistle, Dean Burns put his name on the scoresheet as ultimately, our lads were the stronger team on the evening.
Team & Scorers: Liam Malynn, Glenn Carolan, Kevin Maguire (0-1, 1f), Sean Clinton, David Gaynor, Olan Healy, Rory Hatton, Sean Murphy, Shane Lawless (0-1), Tiarnán O’Donovan (1-2), Luke Buckley (0-4, 2f), Brain Doyle (0-2), Oisín Shortall (0-3), Colin Murphy, Adam Donoghue (0-1)
Subs: Damien Dolan for Rory Hatton, Dean Burns (0-1) for Oisín Shortall, Eoin Fox for Shane Lawless, Alan Lynam for David Gaynor

Division 4 ACFL Round 8
Caulry 2-17
St. Joseph’s 2-17
Caulry and St. Joseph’s served up an entertaining hour of football when the sides clashed in the park on a fine Saturday evening last.
St. Joseph’s were helped into an early lead as they outscored our lads 0-3 to 0-1 in the opening stages of the game. Our point-scorer Thomas Dunning put our noses in front with his goal after ten minutes (this a lovely palmed finish after a ball in by Adam Donoghue and exemplary fielding from David Gaynor). Further points from Liam Malynn (a converted ‘45’) and Luke Buckley (after a patient build up through Olan Healy and Jonny Buckley) had Caulry leading 1-3 to 0-4 by the end of the opening third. The opposition weren’t too long about turning this scoreline on its head though as a duo of orange flags gave them the two-point lead (one from play and one a free). As was the nature of the game, the scoreline was reversed twice over before the break. Our lads momentarily regained the lead courtesy of scores from Dunning (a goal worked from a line ball) and a point (a fisted effort after outfield work from Buckley and Healy), before St. Joseph’s reclaimed the advantage with 1-1 to lead by three at the interval.
The second half proved to be as entertaining as the first with this tit-for-tat nature continuing right up until the referee signalled fulltime. The sides were back on par after one minute as Malynn fired over a two-pointer before Shane Lawless but his name on the scoresheet. A couple of positional switches proved vital from our point of view as it was Caulry who dominated much of the midfield ball throughout this period. This dominance enabled a further trio of unanswered points for us (Lawless from play and Malynn with two pointed-frees) to put St. Joseph’s on the back foot by four points. The opposition halved this deficit with a pair of points before the end of this third quarter. Once again, our lads went about extending our lead as Buckley booted over two unanswered points of his own. But in the same fashion, the visitors tagged on two points to keep within touching distance at all times. St. Joseph’s got lucky on the 53rd minute after the ball rebounded twice (once off our defender and secondly off the post), before eventually trickling into the back of the net to leave our lads now chasing the two-point deficit. With just five minutes on the clock, our lads had to dig deep as Lawless and Oisín Shortall managed to wrangle out scores to level the game. The last few minutes of the game was like a tennis match as the ball travelled up and down the field with the sides exchanging a late pair of points and having to settle for a share of the spoils.
Team & Scorers: Fionn O’Donovan, Ciaran Gaynor, Oisín Shortall (0-1), Jonny Buckley, Rory Hatton, David Gaynor, Olan Healy, Neil Clinton, Shane Lawless (0-5), Dean Burns, Luke Buckley (0-3), Will Buckley, Liam Malynn (0-6, 1 ‘45’, 2 2pt., 2f), Thomas Dunning (2-2), Adam Donoghue
Subs: Aaron Murphy for Will Buckley

Boys U16 League
Caulry 2-8
Maryland/Tang 1-8
Our U16 boys got a win over Maryland/Tang when they hosted the side in the park on a sunny Sunday morning last.
Our boys were helped into an early lead courtesy of points from Brian Moran and Simeon O’Flaherty, and a goal from the boot of Cathal Casey. Maryland/Tang opened their scoring account in style as they raised as orange flag during this period. Maryland/Tand closed the gap to two with a point from play on the 19th minute. Before the halftime whistle, a trio of Caulry points widened this once again as Robert O’Dowd, Darragh Belton and Charlie Buckley all put their names on the scoresheet.
The sides traded early points in the second half as Cillian Moran converted a Caulry free. Both sides were wasteful up front as the defences did well, Jayden Martin, Conor Padden, Shea Ledwith and Sean Maguire all excelled in the red and white jersey. Maryland/Tang managed to bring the deficit back to two by the 51st minute. However, just as they got close, Daniel Casey rattled the back off the net to give Caulry some breathing space. Senan Hatton played very well in goals as one such clearance set Casey up for a point in the 55th minute. A Maryland/Tang pointed-free was cancelled out by Evan Allen then. Late in the game, the opposition managed to sneak in a goal from a free kick despite the best efforts of Hatton as our boys came away with the win on a scoreline of 2-8 to 1-8.
Team: Senan Hatton, Charlie Buckley, Conor Padden, Jayden Martin, Shea Ledwith, Cathal Casey, Sean Maguire, Darragh Belton, Brian Moran, Daniel Casey, Sionnach Winters, Robert O’Dowd, Zach Buckley, Simeon O’Flaherty, Evan Allen, Devon Martin, Harry Casey, Cillian Moran, Rory Hasson
