Kilbeggan Shamrocks 4-9

Our minor boys had a good win over Kilbeggan Shamrocks in the park on Thursday evening last when they hosted the side for Round 2 of this year’s championship.

Our lads raced into a healthy lead outscoring the opposition 1-3 to 0-1 (Darragh Martin accounted for 1-1 while Aaron Buckley converted a free worth two points). Tom Madden got on the end of a ball in on the 10th minute and finished with our second goal of the game. Before the quarter hour mark, Kilbeggan Shamrocks added 1-2 to our 0-1 (Kevin O’Brien on target) to keep in touching distance. Kilbeggan Shamrocks managed to get back to within in a point by the 19th minute as they finished with a goal from a quick free. However, before the interval Martin and John McDermott were successful up front as our boys led by five at the break.

The game continued on a tit-for-tat basis as the opposition kept chomping at our heels, matching our lads score for score more or less. During this passage, Buckley, Simeon O’Flaherty and Martin all took their points well while Hugo McGowan and Tristan Dolan raised green flags as ultimately, our lads ran out winners.

Caulry 1-11

Shandonagh 3-16

Our Junior B’s were defeated on Sunday morning last when a depleted Caulry side made the journey to Shandonagh for this Round 2 clash. 

The homeside set the tone for the game immediately as they got a goal inside the opening 60 seconds of play. Thomas Dunning put our noses in front then when he raised two orange flags in quick succession. The homeside drew level then before going ahead with another point on the 12th minute. Shandonagh managed to stretch their lead to four momentarily when they struck lucky for a second time five minutes later. However, Shane Lawless and David Gaynor kicked points either side of a Shandonagh score to reduce the gap to three. It was level pegging once again by the 21st minute after Daniel Lynam launched in a high ball which ended up in the back of the Shandonagh net. Before the break, the homeside kicked two-point scores either side of a point from Lawless to lead by three at the break.

The sides were evenly matched for the majority of the second half as the teams matched one another’s scores. Points from Dean Martin, John Maguire (two from play) and Dunning (a free) were all cancelled out up the other end of the field. The Shandonagh bench proved vital though, as in the last ten minutes of the game, the homeside managed to pull away thanks to the introduction of the fresh legs. The homeside saw out the game well, taking their chances, and ultimately, taking the brace of points on offer.
