The girls will battle it out against the homeside at 7pm and with the right attitude and performance, they will be hoping to come out on top. All supporters are asked to get behind the girls.

Caulry 4-12

Athlone 3-11

Our girls made it two wins from two when they hosted Athlone in the park on Tuesday evening last for Round 2 of the championship.

Athlone were first off the mark with a point inside the opening 60 seconds of the game. Erin O’Faolain drew level then with a point after three minutes. Our girls went ahead then with points from O’Faolain (a free) and Kelly Lynam. Athlone drew back level with consecutive points on the 13th minute but within seconds, our girls were back in front after Karrissa Burns fired home a goal. Grace Shortall and Kate Corcoran kicked points then either side of another goal, this time from the boot of Anna Walsh. Before the break, the sides shared eight points with Shortall, Lynam and Burns on target for Caulry. 

Similar to their first half, it was the opposition who pointed first inside a minute of the restart. O’Faolain got our girls motoring again when she booted home a goal on the 34th minute. The same scorer followed this up with a point then. Athlone reduced the gap monetarily with 1-1 in quick succession (Grace Donohoe got a vital touch to the second attempt to send it over the bar). By the 40th minute, the gap between the sides was extended to nine when O’Faolain converted a penalty. However, the Athlone girls were on the hunt for a win as they kicked an unanswered 2-2 to out the narrowest of margins between the sides. Points from O’Faolain and Aoife McDermott steadied the Caulry ship somewhat. Credit must be given to the tenacious Caulry defence who held the opposition scoreless at this point in the game. Lynam kicked the insurance point of the game on the 60th minute to ensure our girls got over the line.

Our U14 boys were defeated by a strong Killucan side when they hosted the yellow bellies in the park on Wednesday evening last.

The sides were evenly matched in the early stages of the game: points from Reuben Bucys McLaughlin and Cillian Moran momentarily gave our boys the lead. The scoreline was overturned then after a 7th minute Killucan goal. However, within a minute, we were back in front courtesy of our own three-pointer from Cillian Moran. Points from Charlie Buckley (a free) and Cian Buckley put our boys three points the good then. However, Killucan soon found their stride as they out scored our lads in the second quarter to lead by six at the break.

An early goal from Moran sliced the deficit in half (Aengus Baker laying the ball off well to set up this score). The yellow bellies followed suit with a goal of their own. Points from Moran and Sean Maguire reduced the gap once again, but ultimately, the opposition proved too strong for our boys on this occasion.

Caulry 7-10 

St. Michael’s 5-7

Our minor boys picked up their second consecutive win when they hosted St. Michael’s in the park on Thursday evening last.

The visitors burst out of the tracks and rattled the back of our net within 30 seconds of the throw in. Points from Aaron Buckley and Darragh Martin levelled the game before Darragh Belton put us ahead with a goal of his own after twelve minutes. Buckley kicked his third point of the game then prior to Martin raising our second green flag. The opposition kept in touching distance with their second goal on the 22nd minute. By halftime, our boys lead by six courtesy of another goal from Martin. 

Our boys almost ran away with the game in the early stages of the second half as the forward line could do no wrong: Buckley, John McDermott and Martin booted home goals while there was a steady flow of points from the boots of Martin, Belton and Kevin O’Brien. Our lads were dealt three sucker punches in the form of a St. Michael’s hattrick with five minutes remaining. However, our boys showed good composure with our defence holding strong, ensuring we got away with the win.

Caulry 0-17 

Mullingar Shamrocks 0-15

Caulry and Mullingar Shamrocks provided an entertaining hour of football when the sides met in Springfield park on Friday evening last for the opening round of this year’s J2FC.

By the end of the opening five minutes, the sides were level with two points apiece: the homeside kicked the two opening scores before points from Thomas Dunning and Aaron Murphy drew level. Mullingar Shamrocks momentarily went ahead then when they added three points to one Caulry score (Dunning the scorers again on this occasion after a fine catch at midfield from John Maguire). Dunning showed good guile on the quarter hour mark when he stepped outside the arc and kicked the game’s first two-point score and in doing so, levelled the match once again. Sean Doyle followed this with a point of his own to put our noses in front. Adam Donoghue kicked consecutive points then on the 19th and 20th minutes (Daniel Lynam and Rory Hatton setting up each score) before a duo of Mullingar points kept the narrowest of margins between the sides. Liam Malynn dutifully converted a free to widen the gap once again as further points from Dunning (an orange and white flag) saw Caulry lead by five at the break. 

It was all to play for in the second half as the homeside came out of the dressing rooms with a fighting attitude: a series of unanswered points put one between the sides by the 42nd minute. Dean Burns kicked an important score at this point in the game (Paddy Sleator fielding the ball well on this occasion) to double the deficit once again. Both sides were wasteful up front as a number of chances fell astray. The opposition’s target practice was slightly that better of Caulry’s as they equalised with eight minutes remaining. Sleator found space then and finished with an all-important point to reinstate our narrow lead. David Gaynor and Hatton combined well down the field as this move was finished with a tap over point by Dunning to give our lads a dangerous two-point lead. Mullingar Shamrocks fought until the bitter end as a trio of goal chances were denied (Cillian Nagle bringing off a number of noteworthy interventions to uphold his clean sheet) as a late ‘45’ dropped short and was cleared down the field, ensuring our narrow win.

Caulry 2-11

Mullingar Shamrocks 4-11

Our seniors came up short in Round 1 of this year’s SFC when they battled it out against Mullingar Shamrocks in Moate on a wet Saturday evening last. 

Our lads were almost immediately put on the back foot as Mullingar Shamrocks went 1-2 to no score up inside the opening ten minutes. Colin Murphy got Caulry off the mark then in style on the 13th minute when he kicked the first two-point score of the game. Our lads let their guard slip once again though as Mullingar Shamrocks raced down the field and finished with another goal. By the 21st minute, it was all-square after a duo of goals from the boot of Stephen Connolly (Tiarnán O’Donovan was a key stakeholder in the set up of both goals). Luke Buckley put our noses in front when he raised an orange flag after a patient build up of play via Tadgh Baker. The opposition were next to score with a point on the 26th minute. However, our lads saw out the half well with a pair of points to lead by four at the break (Murphy added his second two-point score before Buckley raised a white flag). 

It was tit-for-tat in the opening minutes of the second half as the sides shared four scores: Mullingar Shamrocks now with the breeze at their back kicked a two pointer during this passage to reduce the gap to three. The tide began to change against Caulry between the 40th and 43rd minutes as a purple patch saw the opposition dominating our kickout and kicking 1-2 to take the lead. Sean Clinton fisted over a point at the end of this third quarter to settle our nerves as the lads now faced the challenge of trying to overturn a two-point deficit. A converted ‘45’ for the men in green and white was cancelled out up our end of the field by a point from Shane Lawless. However, this was as close as it got as Mullingar Shamrocks added 1-1 in the closing stages of the game to get them over the line.
