Junior B Championship Round 2
Caulry 2-14
Castledaly 3-11
Caulry and Castledaly had to settle for a share of the spoils when the sides met in Round 2 of this year’s Junior B Championship in the park on a wet and windy Sunday afternoon last.
Our lads started the game well with a steady stream of points coming from Thomas Dunning, Luke Buckley and Liam Malynn (a two-point free). Oisín Shortall got the first goal of the game after ten minutes when Neil Clinton laid off the ball to him to widen the gap between the sides. Castledaly got going on the 12th minute then when they got a goal of their own (Cillian Nagle was unlucky after initially bringing off a fine save). Dunning accounted for the next two Caulry scores. The opposition kicked their first point of the game on the 20th minute from a free and a goal minutes later saw the deficit brought back to two. The visitors saw out the half with a duo of equalising points as the scoreboard read 1-6 to 2-3 at the break.
Points from Aaron Murphy and Cormac Murphy put Caulry momentarily back in front straight after the restart. However, this was short-lived as Castledaly worked the ball from a kickout and finished with their hattrick. A second point from Murphy put the sides back on par before Dunning’s 34th minute score put Caulry marginally in front. Clinton was fouled in front of goal then as the resulting penalty was put into the back of the Castledaly net by Malynn. However, the opposition did not panic as they responded with a trio of points to put the minimum between the sides once again. The sides shared four points between the 42nd and 48th minutes (Shortall and Johnny Buckley on target for Caulry) as a two pointer by Castledaly levelled the game once again. It was now the visitors chance to go in front and they done so with the aid of two well taken points by their keeper who spent much of this second half in our defence. With time ticking, Malynn got our lads back on track as he converted a free after Shortall was fouled up front. Sean Murphy brought off a brilliant interception then outfield as this move could have been finished to the net had the goal line not of been as crowded, but Clinton wisely fisted the ball over the bar as the sides had to settle for a draw on a scoreline of 2-14 to 3-11.
