Boys Minor Championship Division 4 Final
Caulry 0-5
Athlone 3-8
Our minor boys came up short in the Division 5 County Final when they battled it out against Athlone under lights in Tubberclair on Saturday evening last.
From the offset, Athlone were quicker up front as they tagged on four early points (all from play bar one). Darragh Martin opened out scoring account after twenty-two minutes when he split the posts. Before the halftime whistle, the opposition added three more points to lead by six at the break.
Athlone burst out of the tracks again in the second half as they converted a free before registering the first goal of the game within three minutes of the restart. Hugo McGowan got on the end of a good move on the 39th minute as he finished with a point from play. However, Athlone had their tails up as another goal gave our boys a mountainous task to tackle. It wasn’t all negative from a Caulry point of view though as our lads had a dominant period of play between the 46th and 56th minute. We were very unlucky up front as a number of goal attempts were well blocked down by the opposition’s defence. Instead, we had to settle for points from the boots of Darragh Belton and Aaron Buckley. The boys in blue and white were a lot more clinical up front as although they had fewer scoring chances during this period, they took their scores when they needed to. A late exchange of frees ultimately saw Athlone run out deserving winners.
Team & Scorers: Sam Hatton, Gavin Quilty, Fionn Murphy, Brían Moran, Tom Madden, John Paul, Senan Hatton, Darragh Belton (0-2, 1f), Rhys Mason, Gavin McSharry, Hugo McGowan (0-1), Ciaran Dunning, Kevin O’Brien, Aaron Buckley (0-1, 1f), Darragh Martin (0-1)
Subs: Luke Berry, Luke Quilty, Simeon O’Flaherty, Marcus Grant, Ewan Kelly, Robert Casey, Ryan Doyle, Tristan Dolan, Gavin O’Dowd, John McDermott, Cathal Casey
Hard luck to the lads and their management team of John Madden, John Dolan, Colin Hatton and Stephen Connolly.
