Ladies IFC Final
Caulry 2-6
Moate 1-10
Our ladies came up just short to neighbours Moate in the Intermediate County Final on Saturday afternoon last when they took to the field in Cusack Park.
Moate were quicker off the mark as they opened the scoring with two points from play. Megan Clinton got our girls off the mark after seven minutes when she got on the end of a good pass in by Áine Gaynor. Our girls found it hard to get their scores as Moate defended tenaciously. The opposition stretched their lead then to three with consecutive points on the 14th and 16th minutes. Just before the halftime whistle, Karrissa Burns drew level when she pocketed a goal which was worked from a short free. This saw the sides retreat to the dressing room all-square at halftime.
Moate raced out of the tracks with a point straight after the resumption of play. Burns equalised once again with a point from play. However, within the space of a couple of minutes, Moate were ahead by five after a trio of scores on the 35th and 36th minutes. By the end of the third quarter, Moate had extended this lead to seven. Clinton kicked her second score of the game on the 49th minute (this could have been a goal had it not been for the intervention of the Moate keeper). The sides exchanged a point a piece then with Gaynor converting a free. It was in the dying stages of the game that our ladies’ never-say-die attitude came to life. A converted penalty by Kate Stuart Trainor seemed to ignite our late resurgence as the gap was brought back to three. Our girls worked tirelessly with a duo of points from Clinton and Leah Quigley putting the narrowest of margins between the sides. Both sides had late scoring threats, none of which paid dividends, as ultimately, it wasn’t our day.
