Junior B Championship Round 1
Caulry 2-16
Tubberclair 6-7
Our Junior B’s let an eight-point lead slip when they lined out for our first game of this championship campaign under lights in Tubberclair on Friday night last.
The homeside weren’t long about getting going when their centre back drove through the Caulry defence and fired home a goal after two minutes. Our lads drew two points back then: Adam Donoghue opened our scoring with a point from play after Harry Stuart Trainor got under the kickout before Stuart Trainor split the posts for a point of his own after six minutes. The sides shared four points then as Donoghue and Luke Buckley added scores for Caulry. Tubberclair had a goal disallowed on the 17th minute and this gave our lads a platform to build off as Thomas Dunning finished with a point to level the game. The homeside missed two more goal chances before eventually striking lucky at the third time of asking to reinstate their advantage. However, our lads were only coming good now as they launched a quick scoring blitz in the closing minutes of the half to take the lead. Donoghue (two from play), Olan Healy (two from play), Malynn (one from play and one two-point free) and Alan Daly (one from play) all took their points well while Dunning raised a green flag (Neil Clinton sending in a fabulous pass) to see Caulry retreat to the sideline at halftime with an eight-point cushion.
Malynn restarted the second half scoring by tapping over a free. However, it was the homeside who looked more dangerous in these opening few minutes. They added 2-2 in quick succession to bring the gap back to one by the 38th minute. Malynn tapped over another free at this stage in the game to stall the opposition’s comeback. Our lads will rue their missed chances as a trio of opportunities dropped short. The homeside, on the other hand, were less wasteful up front as two points saw them draw level with twelve minutes remaining. Aaron Murphy momentarily put Caulry back in front when he raised a green flag after Malynn’s effort ricocheted off the upright. We had chances then to further our lead, but the strong Tubberclair defence fought with tenacity. One such example saw them overturn our attack and finish with their fifth goal of the game up the other end of the field, making it all square with just four minutes remaining on the clock. The small margins were going to be vital now and it looked as though our lads might stumble over the line when Malynn converted a 58th minute free to put our noses in front. However, with pressure mounting, the homeside were handed a lifeline in the form of a penalty which they dutifully converted. The referee allowed a couple more plays to transpire, but ultimately Tubberclair had done enough as a late free saw them take the win with three points to spare.
