U20 Championship Round 3
Caulry 3-11
Mullingar Shamrocks 1-11
Our U20s kept up their winning streak when they hosted Mullingar Shamrocks in the park on Tuesday evening last.
Tadgh Baker opened the scoring within 12 seconds of the throw in when he booted over a point. Mullingar Shamrocks drew level then almost instantly. Both sides will rue their missed chances that followed as the next score of the game came from the boot of Brian Doyle after a patch of nice combined teamwork from Oisín Shortall and Dean Burns. The Shamrocks lads had a very well worked goal on the 10th minute after working the ball the whole way from our attack and this put them momentarily in the lead. By the 24th minute, the sides were back in par once again after points from Doyle, Cormac Murphy and Lee Corcoran. John Paul and David Gaynor brought off a series of important saves then as Mullingar Shamrocks had to settle for a point (their no. 14 turning and shooting in style). Doyle and Tiarnán O’Donovan combined well on the 27th minute as O’Donovan finished with a goal to put Caulry in front by two. Shamrocks initially brought it back to a draw game (again their no. 14 adding two fine points), however, a fisted point from Baker ensured our lads retreated to the sideline at halftime with one point to spare.
In the resuming four minutes of the second half, the sides shared as many points (Corcoran and Baker on target for Caulry). There was a duo of missed goals then: Simon O’Grady fired his shot just wide before the opposition done similar up their end of the field. The visitors kicked consecutive points on the 38th and 39th minutes to overturn the scoreline one point in their favour. Aaron Murphy converted a free then but by the end of this third quarter, the Shamrocks boys lead 1-11 to 1-9. Our lads dug deep for the final quarter as points from Shortall and Burns made it level pegging. Caulry took the lead then on the 51st minute with a goal when O’Grady got the final touch to a ball in by O’Donovan (Baker initially setting up this score from the kickout). Baker then put the final nail in the coffin when he raised our third green flag of the evening on the 53rd minute: he won the kickout before racing up the field and send a bullet-like goal into the top left hand corner of the net. This proved to be the last score of the game as the scoreboard read 3-11 to 1-11 at the full time whistle.

J2FC Round 1
Caulry 3-10
Garrycastle 2-13
There was nothing separating Caulry and Garrycastle when the sides met in Round 1 of the J2FC last Friday evening.
The homeside opened the scoring account with a pointed free on the 1st minute. Alan Lynam then booted home the first of the evening’s goals after a good pass in by Mark Fitzpatrick to get Caulry off the mark. Adam Donoghue added a point for Caulry before Garrycastle drew level when their no. 5 raised a green flag after a making a good run forward. The next score of the game came in the 14th minute, this a converted 45 by Liam Malynn. Fitzpatrick put four points between the sides with his goal after a good pass in by Adam Mullins, but by the 23rd minute, it was back to the narrowest of margins after a trio of Garrycastle points. Our lads pulled away a bit towards the end of the first half with a smattering of points from Malynn (two two pointers) and Darren Hynds, the strong wind being an assist to these scores.
By the end of the 35th minute of the second half, Caulry led by nine points after a fabulous two pointer by Lynam and well struck goal by Alan Daly (Dean Burns winning the kickout to help set up this attack). Despite this promising start to the half, our lads failed to push on as the opposition started chipping away at the deficit. But the 50th minute, our lead was cut back to three. At this stage in the game, our lads were struggling to find scores with Burns eventually putting an end to the famine with his effort in the 52nd minute. However, Garrycastle’s tails were up as they tapped over a hattrick of points to make it level pegging. A few late attacks materialise for both sides, none of which were successful as the teams settled for a share of the spoils.
Team & Scorers: Cillian Nagle, Luke Hamilton, Johnny Buckley, Adam Mullins, Rory Mullins, Darren Hynds (0-1), Dean Burns (0-1), Alan Lynam (1-2, 1 2pt.), David Gaynor, Alan Daly (1-0), Liam Malynn (0-5, 1 45, 2 2pt.), Will Buckley, Aaron Murphy, Mark Fitzpatrick (1-0), Adam Donoghue (0-1)
Subs: Ciaran Allen for Darren Hynds, Liam Doyle for Aaron Murphy
SFC Round 2
Caulry 2-13
St. Malachy’s 2-12
Our seniors picked up their first brace of points in Round 2 of this year’s SFC after a close contest in Moate on Saturday evening last when they clashed with St. Malachy’s.
Our lads will rue their missed chances throughout the game, particularly in the opening minutes as a trio of opportunities went wide before Conor McCormack eventually opened the scoring account on the 3rd minute. Tadgh Baker added our second point of the game before St. Malachy’s ever launched an attack. The opposition were just as wasteful upfront as two St. Malachy’s wides preceded our next score of the game: this a two-pointer from the boot of McCormack.
St. Malachy’s looked dangerous up front by times as their first goal chance of the game went wide. Alan Malynn added a point then to put Caulry five ahead. The black and red side got off the mark on the 14th minute when a dropping ball in on top of our goal ended up inside the net to reduce the gap. Between the 18th and 20th minutes, the sides shared four points (Malynn and Thomas Dunning on target for Caulry). However, the opposition finished the half strong, adding a goal on the 27th minute before converting a two pointer free just before the interval to lead 2-4 to 0-7 at the halftime whistle.
Our lads got off to what should have been a great start to the second half when the St. Malachy’s full back was forced to their sideline after giving away a penalty and consequently receiving a black card. However, it wasn’t to be as the penalty trickled out wide. This seemed to be the turning point in the game though as our lads dug deep and took advantage of the extra man. Baker initially added a point before Sean Murphy followed suit. Murphy then gave Caulry the lead when he sidestepped a St. Malachy’s defender and rattled the back of the net. St. Malachy’s momentarily drew one back, but by the 41st minute, Caulry lead by four after Lawless pocketed a goal when he combined nicely with Tiarnán O’Donovan. However, St. Malachy’s weren’t going to lie down and take a defeat easily as they chipped away at the deficit by adding the next three scores of the game, including a two pointer free, to leave the sides on par with nine minutes remaining. Baker nosed Caulry in front on the 54th minute after a very patient build up of play. Substitute Damien Dolan fired over another then to double our lead. But true to form, St. Malachy’s fought back and went ahead after booting over another trio of consecutive points (one free and two from play). This put them ahead by one as sixty minutes elapsed. The Caulry lads showed great grit and determination as they refused to lie down when it mattered most. Stephen Connolly, who had just been introduced six minutes earlier, found space and booted over the equalising point. With tenacity and perseverance, Caulry fought for the resulting kickout, winning it and setting McCormack up for a scoring opportunity which he dutifully converted to edge our lads ahead deep into injury time. This transpired to be the last score of the game as the referee signalled full time to bring an end to the action packed game.
Team & Scorers: Jack Connaughton, Glenn Carolan, Kevin Maguire, Oisín Shortall, Sean Clinton, Eoghan Grennan, Sean Murphy (1-1), John Maguire, Tadgh Baker (0-3), Shane Lawless (1-0), Conor McCormack (0-4, 1 2pt.), Tiarnán O’Donovan, Thomas Dunning (0-1), Colin Murphy, Alan Malynn (0-2)
Subs: Damien Dolan (0-1) for John Maguire, Harry Stuart Trainor for Thomas Dunning, Stephen Connolly (0-1) for Colin Murphy
Ladies IFC Round 2
Caulry 4-17
Moate 3-11
Our intermediate ladies hosted Moate in the park at the same time as our men’s game on Saturday evening last for their Round 2 of the IFC. At the end of the first thirty minutes, our ladies lead by double scores (2-10 to 1-5) as the breeze helped to build up a strong lead. The girls didn’t let conditions bother them too much in the second half however, as they almost matched their first half scoring tally. The ladies worked together well as a team, kicking scores from all angles and taking their goals well enabling them to run out worthy winners with nine points to spare. Well done girls!
