U16 Championship Round 2
Caulry 2-5
Maryland/Tang 4-13
It was a game of two halves when our U16s met Maryland/Tang in the park on Monday evening last for their second game in this year’s championship.
Caulry hit the ground running with Aaron Buckley opening the scoring account after 42 seconds. The visitors’ first attack came in the form of a dangerous high ball in which rattled off the butt of the post before being tapped over the bar. Our boys missed a trio of chances then, but all wrongs were rectified on the 9th minute when Darragh Martin fired home a goal. Buckley then stretched our lead with a superb long-range point having combined nicely with Marcus Grant. The boys in maroon and blue always kept in touching distance and by the end of this first quarter things were tied at 1-2 apiece. Robert Casey brought off a fine save, but the next two points of the game came from the Maryland/Tang side to nose them in front. Throughout this opening half, the sides were evenly matched as Caulry enjoyed a period of dominance between the 25th and 27th minutes; this period yielded an unanswered 1-2 to overturn the scoreline once again. Maryland/Tang had the last say on proceedings with a pointed-free on the 29th minute to narrowly trail at the deficit on a scoreline of 2-4 to 1-6.
Things took a turn for the worst from a Caulry perspective in the second half as our boys only contributed one score to the scoreline. This can be partially attributed to the injuries of Darragh Martin and Hugo McGowan which caused a significant stoppage in play and saw the two boys retreat to the sideline most of the remainder of the game. Maryland/Tang were clinical up front and added a range of points and a duo of goals. To credit the Caulry boys, they never gave up with John McDermott and Gavin McSharry giving very good accounts of themselves in defence. Ultimately, the opposition ran out comfortable winners as a point from Buckley on the 64th minute brought an end to the play. We wish Darragh and Hugo speedy recoveries.
Team & Scorers: Robert Casey, Tom Madden, John McDermott, Sam Hatton, Tristan Dolan, Gavin McSharry, Kevin O’Brien, John Paul, Rhys Mason, Matthew Allen, Hugo McGowan, Luke Berry (0-1), Marcus Grant, Aaron Buckley (1-4, 1f), Darragh Martin (1-0)

U20 Championship Round 2
Caulry 0-16
Mullingar Shamrocks 2-8
Caulry and Mullingar Shamrocks served up an entertaining hour of football when the sides met in Round 2 of the U20 Championship on Tuesday evening last.
The homeside made a glorious start to the half and lead 1-2 to 0-1 by the 10th minute; the opening score of the game was a Mullingar Shamrocks goal before Brian Doyle drew one back with his effort. The men in green and white then added two points to stretch their lead to four. A converted-free from Lee Corcoran preceded points from Brian Doyle and Cody Parker which brought Caulry right back into contention. During this period of the game, the Caulry lads played exemplary football as the next two scores came from the boot of Tiarnán O’Donovan to leave it level pegging by the 24th minute. Caulry moved the ball well with all positions playing their part; one such example was a flowing move via Tadgh Baker and O’Donovan which was popped over the bar by Corcoran. Dylan McCormack added the last score of the half thanks to good fielding from David Gaynor to leave Caulry leading by two at the break.
Our lads made a good start to the second half accounting for the first three points; Aaron Murphy kicked scores either side of Parker adding his second of the game. Shamrocks momentarily broke our stride on the 40th minute with their point from play. However, Baker showed guile when he tore forward and fisted over a point minutes later. Cormac Murphy then added one of his own on the 47th minute to stretch our lead to six. At this point in the game, Caulry should have drove on and saw the game out, however, Shamrocks weren’t going to go down without a fight. This revolution was helped by the fact that they were handed a goal opportunity on a platter on the 47th minute, which they pounced on and converted to half the deficit. Their centre-forward then single handedly overturned the deficit when he added the next four points of the game; two of these from ‘45’s, one a free and one a fabulous point from play on the 57th minute (during this period Conor Hynes also brought off a vital save). It looked unlikely that Caulry would come away with a win as time ran into stoppage, but our lads knew a result was needed in order to keep their championship hopes alive. They moved the ball patiently up the field, waiting for a scoring opportunity to arise, which came on the 62nd minute when Baker was fouled. Murphy routinely tapped this one over to level the game. Mullingar Shamrocks won the following kickout and made a pass down the field, but much to their dismay Dara Shortall was the eager recipient as the ball was overturned; this attack eventually resulted in another foul being committed, and once again Murphy slotted the ball over the bar. The referee allowed one more passage of play to transpire and it eventually finished in the form of a Doyle point as this secured our victory with two-points to spare.
Team & Scorers: Conor Hynes, Dara Shortall, Cormac Murphy (0-1), Eoin McCormack, David Gaynor, Tadgh Baker (0-1), Brian Doyle (0-3), Harry Stuart Trainor, Alan Lynam, Daniel Lynam, Tiarnán O’Donovan (0-2), Brendan McCormack, Cody Parker (0-2), Lee Corcoran (0-2, 1f), Dylan McCormack (0-1)
Subs: Aaron Murphy (0-4, 3f) for Daniel Lynam
Minor Championship Round 3
Caulry 1-12
Garrycastle 1-12
Our minors had to settle for a share of the spoils when they met Garrycastle in the park on Thursday evening last for their third championship outing.
The sides shared four points in the first quarter of the game; Simon O’Grady’s mark and Aaron Murphy’s free preceded a duo of pointed-frees for the visitors. The game was lacklustre in atmosphere as the first score from play didn’t come until the 16th minute; this from the boot of Lee Corcoran. Garrycastle went on to score two points in tandem (one of these another free and the second from play). Caulry went in at the break with a slight upper hand courtesy of pointed-frees from Murphy to lead 0-5 to 0-4 at the interval.
Caulry were dealt a double blow in the resuming minute of the second half when Brian Doyle was on the receiving end of a black card which set the visitors up for a pointed-free. The opposition made the most of their extra man during this ten-minute interlude as they found space and fired home a goal before adding a duo of points from play. Corcoran’s effort on the 36th minute kept Caulry’s scoreline ticking over but another couple of Garrycastle points had their lead stretched to six. Our lads then added two points to Garrycastle’s one to bring the gap back to five as Doyle re-entered the field on the 40th minute. Now back to full force, the Caulry boys patched together attacks better, although not all these efforts finished with scores as our tally of wides began to grow. We had to wait until the 44th minute for our next score; this a point from Murphy after he drove a penalty kick over the bar rather than in the back of the net. Corcoran’s effort on the 47th minute then narrowed the gap to three, and within 60 second from this score, Caulry found themselves with the lead after Kyle Rainey fired home a goal prior to O’Grady’s point. Garrycastle worked the ball down the field and secured the equaliser on the 54th minute. They then had a ‘45’ awarded, and clearly on the search for the win, they drove in a high ball but John Paul in goals proved his worth when he cleared his line. The last two scores of the game were from frees, one each for either side as the game finished level on a scoreline of 1-12 to 1-12.
Team & Scorers: John Paul, Eoin McCormack, Cormac Murphy, Kyle Byrne, Cody Parker, Rory Hatton, Daniel Lynam, David Gaynor, Brain Doyle, Aaron Murphy (0-4, 3f), Dean Burns (0-1), Lee Corcoran (0-4, 1f), Kyle Rainey (1-0), Simon O’Grady (0-3, 1m), Aaron Hanevy
Subs: Dara Shortall for Daniel Lynam, Cian Malone for Aaron Hanevy
SFC Round 3
Caulry 3-6
St. Loman’s 3-10
Our seniors suffered another defeat in this year’s championship at the hands of reigning county champions St. Loman’s when the sides met in Cusack Park on Friday evening last.
St. Loman’s got off to the best of starts when a high ball in landed into the back of the Caulry net as Jack Connaughton was caught off-guard possibly due to the glistening sunshine. The Mullingar men then added a point, this from mark, before Caulry got going on the 6th minute; Senan Baker was the man who kicked our opening point after efforts from Kevin Maguire and Ben Moran were unsuccessful. The opposition were more efficient up front as they accounted for the next four points of the game, two from frees and two from play. Caulry played with a packed defence, and this showed up front as we were slow to get scores with Alan Malynn registering our next point on the 18th minute after getting the finishing touch to Baker’s effort. From this kickout, St. Loman’s worked the ball down along the sideline before their no. 11 split the posts. The Mullingar side then stretched their lead to ten with their second goal of the game on the 21st minute. Caulry managed to draw two of these back before the break with Damien Dolan and Baker adding points. During this period, Caulry had multiple scoring opportunities, one of these a goal but Baker over-shot and fired over the bar to leave the scoreboard reading 2-6 to 0-4 at the interval.
St. Loman’s were first to get motoring in the second half, tapping over a point on the 36th minute to further their advantage. Our lads put a dent in the deficit then when Malynn fired home a goal after Baker’s initial effort was blocked. However, St. Loman’s responded in style, slotting over a point before registering their third goal of the game on the 40th minute. Tadgh Baker and Moran added points either side of a converted St. Loman’s free between the 42nd and 47th minutes. Connaughton brought off a fine save as the last ten minutes of the game approached. At this stage, our lads began to take charge of proceedings and attack the play more. This paid dividends on the 54th minute when Baker got a touch to Tiarnán O’Donovan’s ball in and registered a goal to bring the gap back to six. St. Loman’s steadied the ship then with a well-taken point from play. However, the Caulry lads dug deep as Shane Lawless sent a ball in towards our forward line and once again, Baker finished in style on the 60th minute. As the clock ran over, both sides had chances but none of these came to fruition as it all proved to be a little too late from a Caulry point of view.
Team & Scorers: Jack Connaughton, Darren Hynds, Tom Cloonan, Damien Dolan (0-1), Sean Clinton, Eoghan Grennan, Harry Stuart Trainor, Stephen Connolly, Ben Moran (0-1), Olan Healy, Kevin Maguire, Tadgh Baker (0-1), Conor McCormack, Alan Malynn (1-1), Senan Baker (2-2)
Subs: Tiarnán O’Donovan for Olan Healy, Sean Murphy for Harry Stuart Trainor, Emmet Nally for Damien Dolan, John Maguire for Darren Hynds, Shane Lawless for Sean Clinton
Ladies Intermediate Championship Round 1
Ladies Intermediate Championship Round 1
Caulry 2-10
Athlone 2-15
Our ladies suffered a defeat in their opening game of this year's championship when they hosted Athlone in the park on Saturday evening last.
The sides were evenly matched in the early stages of the game as by the end of the opening ten minutes it was all square at 0-2 apiece; Leah Hallisy opened the scoring account before Athlone followed suit up their end of the field. Aine Gaynor then added Caulry's second score on the 7th minute after a good catch from Megan Clinton before Athlone's no. 15 popped over the equaliser. The Athlone girls then got four points on the trot, all from play to take the lead. Credit must be given to Aisling Claffey in goals who got a vital touch to Athlone's 16th minute effort and sent the ball over the bar rather than into the back of the net. Gaynor brought Caulry right back into contention then when she riffled the back of the Athlone net after finishing off a nice move started by Amy Murphy. Kate Stuart Trainor levelled proceedings with her well-taken point on the 18th minute. However, Athlone soon had their advantage reinstated when they got their second goal of the game, this from a dropping free. The sides exchanged different periods of dominance and between the 20th and 22nd minutes, it was Caulry's turn to take charge. Gaynor added a duo of points before Hallisy added her second to draw the tally once again (Molly Connaughton and Ruth Martin both playing integral roles in setting up these scores). Athlone's 23rd minute point was cancelled out up our end of the field with Jasmine Maloney putting her name on the scoresheet. However, the Athlone ladies had the final say when they fired home a late goal to leave Caulry trailing 2-7 to 1-7 at the break.
It was all to play for once again on the 32nd minute after Gaynor added her second goal, helped greatly by a ball in from Connaughton. Claffey again done well under pressure, forcing an Athlone point on the 35th minute. The game went on a tit for tat basis then with Athlone keeping the slight upper hand as the scoreline read 2-10 to 2-9 by the 49th minute (both Caulry scores coming from converted-frees by Gaynor). A Caulry attack broke down on the 51st minute and the visitors used this to their advantage, finishing with a point to widen the gap to two. Athlone were all over the play at this point and added the next two scores of the game. A pointed-free from Gaynor momentarily broke the Athlone stride, but the Athlone ladies finished strong as they added two late points to take the win.
Team & Scorers: Aisling Claffey, Ella Corcoran, Ruth Martin, Grace Shortall, Aishlin Gaynor, Amy Murphy, Eunice David, Jasmine Maloney (0-1), Rachel Maguire, Megan Clinton, Ava Hallisy, Molly Connaughton, Kate Stuart Trainor (0-1), Leah Hallisy (0-2), Aine Gaynor (2-6, 3f)
Subs: Susan Duignan for Rachel Maguire, Aoife Collins for Molly Connaughton, Anna Malone for Grace Shortall
Junior 2 Championship Round 1
Caulry 1-14
Garrycastle 2-13
Our juniors came up short against Garrycastle in the park on Sunday morning last when they hosted the side for Round 1 of this year’s Junior 2 Championship.
The teams exchanged early points with Robbie Hickey opening Caulry’s scoring account after his first touch. Garrycastle added the next two points to give themselves a two-point lead by the 5th minute. Liam Malynn had the sides back level by the 9th minute when he kicked a trio of points (two from play and one from a free) to Garrycastle’s singular score (a mark on the 6th minute). The sides were evenly matched and traded another 0-2, this time Sean O’Neill was the man on target for Caulry. Malynn put our lads ahead on the 14th minute with a converted-free after a foul was committed on Hickey to give Caulry the lead for the first time in the game. However, this was short-lived as a converted penalty put the men in red and green back in front four minutes later. Malynn tapped over another routine free to keep Caulry in touching distance and by the 25th minute, the scoreline was overturned 1-7 to 1-5 in our favour when Alan Lynam pocketed himself a goal. The visitors saw out the half with a couple of points then to leave it all-square at the halftime whistle.
Nicky Killane’s fisted point opened the second half to marginally give Caulry the advantage. But, Garrycastle weren’t long about finding their feet, rattling the back of our net on the 32nd minute to reclaim the lead. Points from Luke Buckley and Will Buckley brought the sides back on par by the 41st minute. In a similar vein to the first half, there was very little to separate the sides as between the 42nd and 54th minutes, the sides matched one another for scores; our points came from Malynn (O’Neill breaking the ball down at midfield to set up this attack), Rory Mullins (a fine, long-range effort), Malynn again (Mullins, this time being the instigator having intercepted a Garrycastle attack) and Hickey (a well-taken effort against the breeze). The score that gave the opposition the lead that they wouldn’t lose came on the 55th minute from their full forward which was well-taken after a patient build-up of play. Some missed Caulry chances the preceded the last score of the game, again in the form of a Garrycastle point from play which secured them the two-point win.
Team & Scorers: Cillian Nagle, Ciaran Allen, Johnny Buckley, Rory Mullins (0-1), Alan Daly, Luke Hamilton, Sean O’Neill (0-1), Alan Lynam (1-0), Oisín Shortall, Will Buckley (0-1), Robbie Hickey (0-2), Luke Buckley (0-1), Liam Malynn (0-7, 3f), Mark Fitzpatrick, Hugh Allen
