Our ladies kept up their winning streak when they hosted Athlone in the park on a wet and miserable Thursday evening last for their final round robin game of the championship.

The sides were evenly matched in the opening stages of the game as they shared a tally of 0-4 (Leah Quigley and Megan Clinton were our point scorers). Erin O’Faolain got the first goal of the game after fourteen minutes when she got a touch to a rebound ball (Kate Stuart Trainor’s initially effort rattled back off the crossbar). The visitors responded well though as a point from play narrowed the gap to two before a goal on the 16th minute gave them the lead. Athlone kicked a third unanswered score then before Aishling Gaynor’s 23rd minute point stunted their reign somewhat. The sides exchanged late goals (Clinton on target for Caulry) to leave us trailing by one at the break.

Molly Connaughton levelled the game within a minute of the restart before both sides missed an array of chances. Aine Gaynor eventually struck lucky on the 42nd minute when she wisely took advantage of the ‘solo & go’ rule and finished with a goal. The same player added a point then to stretch our lead to four. Athlone’s first score of the half came then from a free, but it was our girls who were more impressive scorers in this half as Gaynor added another duo of points. A late point from Athlone rounded off the scoring as this result books our ladies a semi final spot against Loughnavalley in two weeks.

St. Loman’s 0-18

Our seniors put up a good fight against St. Loman’s for their fifth and final group stage game of this year’s championship in Moate on Sunday evening last.

Playing with the breeze at their backs in the opening half, it was the opposition who got scores with ease as they racked up 0-5 within the opening ten minutes (two of these outside the 40m arc). Cormac Murphy kicked our opening point of the game after eleven minutes when he combined well with Tiarnán O’Donovan. The Mullingar side raised two more orange flags then before Shane Lawless booted over our second point of the game. Before the break, St. Loman’s added two more two pointers as Senan Baker kicked a singular point (from a free) to see us trail by double digits at the break.

Credit must be given to our lads who came out fighting in the second half. This apparent from the offset when Lawless slotted over his second point just 15 seconds after the restart. Brain Doyle was fouled up front then, and this gave Baker a chance to draw two back as he made no mistake in slotting over this long-ranged free. The sides traded pointed-frees then before a point from play from Adam Donoghue (Baker and O’Donovan being instrumental in this paly) reduced the gap to six. Doyle put his name on the scoresheet at the end of this third quarter (O’Donovan again being a key stakeholder in this score) before a pointed-free for the men in blue and white momentarily stalled our stride. Baker, who impressed throughout this second half, kicked scores either side of another St. Loman’s point then to bring the gap back to four. A duo of St. Loman’s points on the 54th and 55th minutes stretched their lead once again momentarily, but these were cancelled out after a fine two-point score by Doyle. Donoghue tapped over a late point to reduce the gap to three but ultimately, the opposition had done enough to take the win.

This result brings an end to our SFC campaign for the year. Ultimately, the results didn’t go our way, but we’re confident the lads can take what they’ve learned this year, build on it, and come back stronger next year. We want to thank the lads for their commitment and effort throughout the year. Even when their backs were against the wall, they showed up session after session, put in the work, and gave it their all. Hard luck lads!
