Tubberclair 7-14

Our U20 lads were defeated by a strong Tubberclair side when the sides met in the park on Tuesday evening last.

Tubberclair were quick out of the traps and had two goals scored before Lee Corcoran kicked our opening point of the game (this a two-point free). Tubberclair kept up their high tempo ways as they added a trio of points then. Buckley and Corcoran converted their respective frees but a quick concession of 2-2 only furthered the visitor’s lead. Buckley took his point well on the 23rd minute but Tubberclair saw out the half with more points to lead well at the break.

The second half continued in much the same vein with the opposition dominating proceedings throughout. Fionn O’Donovan reopened the scoring within a minute of the restart before a barrage of Tubberclair scores. Cormac Murphy was the next scorer for Caulry, finishing with a point. However, this was as good as it got as ultimately, the opposition proved too strong and ran out comfortable winners.

St. Mary’s Rochfortbridge 1-14

Our second team had a hard-fought victory over St. Mary’s in the park on Sunday morning last.

Playing with the breeze at their backs in the opening half, our lads found their feet quicker with Liam Malynn kicking a fine two-pointer to open the scoring account. This was followed closely by a point from Aaron Murhpy after a great ball in by the same man. Murphy raised the first green flag of the game after fourteen minutes following a fine display of teamwork by our lads. St. Mary’s responded well to this score as they kicked their opening point of the game then. A two-point score from Thomas Dunning stretched our lead to seven by the end of this opening quarter. St. Mary’s managed to patch together some better play at this stage in the game as two points from play drew the deficit back. John Maguire got a touch to a free in by Malynn to add another Caulry point, but before the interval a goal for St. Mary’s saw our lads’ lead sliced back to three.

Within two minutes of the restart, the sides were all-square courtesy of two scores for the opposition (both frees and one two-pointer). Malynn raised a white flag then to put our noses momentarily in front, but within a matter of minutes, our lads were on the back foot after the Rochfortbridge side added 0-3 (another two-point free and point from play). Malynn momentarily put the narrowest of margins between the sides when he tapped over another routine free on the 41st minute. St. Mary’s had their lead back to two though as they found it easier to get scores, now aided with the breeze. Dunning done well on the 48th minute as he booted over a two-point score to tie the game once again (Eoin Shortall was instrumental in the set up of this score). However, the visitors managed to edge in front with a duo of points. The Rochfortbridge side let their guard slip on the 55th minute as a breach in the 3up rule saw them conceded a vital free worth two points which Malynn dutifully converted to level the sides once again. Another free in our favour three minutes later gave Malynn the chance to regain the lead and true to form, the free taker booted over the score to leave the scoreboard reading 1-14 to 1-12 with just two minutes of normal time left on the clock. To credit both sides, they played until the bitter end as the following kickout was won by St. Mary’s and resulted in an equalising two-point score being tapped over up the other end of the field. Now with the clock ticking and injury time almost over, both sides were desperate for a win and Caulry got a lifeline in the form of a free. Once again, Malynn did not disappoint as he tapped this over at his ease as this score, ultimately secured a semi-final spot for our lads.

The Downs 0-20

Our seniors suffered another defeated in Round 4 of the SFC at the hands of The Downs on a wet and miserable Sunday evening last.

The opposition were first off the mark with a point inside the opening 60 seconds of play. Oisín Shortall drew level after three minutes with a point of his own. A converted free for The Downs was cancelled out up our end of the field by Shortall (Shane Lawless and Adam Donoghue combining well for this score). Donoghue then added a point of his own to edge us ahead. By the end of the opening quarter though, it was The Downs who lead by one courtesy of three unanswered points from play. Sean Clinton instigated an important move in defence when he blocked down the opposition’s shot as this score was eventually finished to the back of the net by Tiarnán O’Donovan up the other end of the field. O’Donovan then added a point to give Caulry a three-point lead. The Downs responded well though as a trio of scores had once again regained their marginal lead. Before the break, a free by Senan Baker was cancelled out to see The Downs retreat to the dressing rooms with a 0-11 to 1-7 advantage. 

The sides shared 0-4 in the opening minutes of the second half: Stephen Connolly and Shortall on target for us. The opposition began to pull away then as they tapped over three unanswered points from play before the end of this third quarter. Our lads found it harder to get scores on the board during this passage as the weather conditions worsened. Before the fulltime whistle, Baker pointed but ultimately, it wasn’t to be.
