Minor Championship Quarter Final
Caulry 2-14
Killucan 1-12
Caulry and Killucan served up an exciting contest in the park on Sunday afternoon last when the sides finished all square after full time and extra time was needed to see who would progress to the semi-final stages.
Caulry pointed straight from the throw-in with Aaron Murphy splitting the posts after 30 seconds of play. John Paul was denied a goal after a nice pass in from Kyle Rainey as Killucan’s opening point of the game came on the 5th minute. Dean Martin was next to find his shooting boots with his score coming on the 7th minute before Cormac Murphy done similar on the 10th. The sides then exchanged points with Rainey’s effort cancelling out Killucan’s. Lee Corcoran put three between the sides on the 14th minute, and this lead was soon double when Aaron Hanevy fired home a goal on the 24th minute (Rory Hatton and Simon O’Grady being instrumental in this move). The yellow bellies always kept in touching distance adding 0-3 to Caulry’s 0-1 (a fisted effort from Hanevy) to give Caulry a four-point advantage at the break.
Caulry were wasteful in the opening minutes of the second half with two goal chances going astray. It was three times a charm though as Murphy struck lucky on the 33rd minute. Despite this positive start, our boys failed to push on and by the 44th minute, it was back to two points after the yellow bellies rattled off 1-2 in quick succession. Caulry had some chances but were unable to find the target as Killucan completely dominated play. In particular, the opposition were all over our kickout which really paid dividends between the 50th and 53rd minutes as they rattled off a trio of quick points, and as a result, gave themselves a one-point lead. It was do or die at this stage in the game as it looked as though our lads were heading out of the championship. But the Caulry boys dug deep as Killucan crumbled under the pressure, giving away two soft frees which Murphy dutifully converted, overturning the scoreline in tow. The yellow bellies were given a lifeline on the 60th minute and they made the most of this, popping over the equaliser and forcing extra-time.
Caulry hit the ground running in the first couple of minutes of extra time with a duo of points (O’Grady pointed straight from the throw-in after a good catch from David Gaynor and Daniel Lynam fired over a point after firstly intercepting the play in defence and tearing up the field to be on the receiving end of the pass). Corcoran’s 8th minute effort widened the gap to three momentarily before a Killucan free left just two between the sides at the interval.
Corcoran popped over a ‘45’ in the early stages of the second passage. Cody Parker then sent over the insurance point as he widened the gap to four. The Caulry lads were willing to die with their boots on as they gave everything to the final few minutes of play, not letting Killucan sneak a much-needed goal. The last score of the game eventually came from Murphy (another free) as our lads had done enough to secure a semi-final spot.
