It is with great sadness and regret that we learned of the passing of one of our club’s great stalwarts George Hatton last week. He was a man whose life was so deeply woven into the fabric of the GAA, our club and our community.

His love of the GAA began in the simplest of ways – kicking a paper ball around the schoolyard and spending his evenings watching the senior team train, proudly kicking the ball back to the players. That love remained with him throughout his life.

His playing career took him to Ballinamore in Co. Leitrim in 1955 and then to Craobh Rua in Co. Sligo, where he went on to represent the county. Despite playing elsewhere, his ambition was always to return home and wear the red and white jersey in Cusack Park. He returned in 1966, going on to play with and train our adult team and, in 1969, he lined out at full-forward on our inaugural intermediate championship-winning team.

His contribution continued long after his playing days. George was a dedicated coach, most notably guiding our successful 2002 Junior Championship-winning team. His coaching talents also took him to the Westmeath minors and to teams in Roscommon.

But George’s contribution to the GAA extended far beyond the football field. He was a proud and passionate member of the Association and embodied everything it means to be Irish. Through his involvement in Scór, he celebrated his love of our language, music, folklore and heritage. He also served on various club committees and was a loyal supporter of every generation of our club. He took a particular interest in our underage players and could often be found in the park on an evening, watching the young boys and girls play.

We extend our deepest sympathies to the Hatton family at this sad time.

All roads lead to Athlone on Sunday afternoon next to see our juniors line out in the semi final stages of this year’s J2FC. Our lads will battle it out against neighbours Garrycastle with only one final spot up for grabs. We wish the lads and the management team the very best of luck.

All supporters are asked to get behind the lads. 

Well done to our minor boys who secured themselves a final spot when they overcame St. Michael’s in the park on Friday evening last.

Congratulations to our U14 girls who were crowned Division 2 champions after defeating Mullingar Shamrocks in the county final on Saturday afternoon last. A big well done to the girls and their management team who worked tirelessly throughout the year.

Our ladies qualify for a county final after defeating Loughnavalley on Sunday afternoon last. In a well contested affair, our ladies managed to secure themselves a final spot against Moate in a couple of weeks time. Well done girls.
