Division 4 ACFL Round 3
Caulry 7-9
Athlone 3-12
Our second team kept up their winning ways when they made the short journey to Páirc Chiaráin on Tuesday evening last.
It looked as though Caulry were going to run away with the game after a flurry of goals in the first quarter. Thomas Dunning opened the scoring account with a point before Luke Buckley rattled off a pair of goals. Between these two goals, Athlone raised an orange flag to get off the mark. An Athlone pointed-free was cancelled out up our end of the field as Roan Sweeney finished with a point. Buckley booted home his hattrick then before Dunning got a vital touch to a ball in by Liam Malynn and made it 4-2 to 1-3. The homeside drew some back with their first goal of the game after seventeen minutes. A smattering of points for the men in blue and white, including another two-pointer, brought the gap back to four (this Athlone resurgence could be attributed to Caulry being reduced to 14 men on the 23rd minute). Before the interval, Malynn added a point to leave the scoreboard reading 4-3 to 1-7 at the break.
Athlone were brought right back into contention eight minutes after the resumption of play as they out scored Caulry 1-2 to 0-1 (Dunning on target for us). Despite the numerical disadvantage, it wasn’t long before our lads got back into the swing of the game: Malynn tapped over a routine free  before Dean Burns rattled the back of the net minutes after being introduced (Alan Lynam was instrumental in this score after a superb catch at midfield). A point for Athlone preceded our sixth goal of the game (this from Dunning after Olan Healy overturned the ball in our defence before travelling up the field). Between the 48th and 53rd minutes, our lads added 1-2 to Athlone’s 0-2 to widen the gap once again. The homeside registered their third goal of the game then, but it was our lads who rounded off the scoring with points from Malynn and Aaron Murphy. This results makes it three wins from three for our Division 4 side.
