Division 1 ACFL Round 2
Caulry 1-9
Mullingar Shamrocks 5-11
Our seniors suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Mullingar Shamrocks on Sunday afternoon last when the sides met in the park for Round 2 of this year’s ACFL campaign.
Stephen Connolly opened the scoring account with a well-taken two pointer after two minutes. Despite this promising start, Mullingar Shamrocks weren’t long about finding their stride as they added a point from a short range free before a second error up front resulted in a penalty which they dutifully converted. Within a minute, they were five points ahead as they rattled the back of the net for a second time after six minutes of play. Shane Lawless steadied the Caulry ship somewhat then as he raised the second orange flag of the game. The sides exchanged points then (Luke Buckley converting a Caulry free) before a goal by Aaron Murphy brought Caulry right back into the game (this move was teed up by Tom Cloonan and Roan Sweeney). Before the interval, the visitors added another free to marginally lead 2-3 to 1-5 at the break.
Our lads started the second half on positive terms as we accounted for the first two scores; Sean Murphy and Tiarnán O’Donovan taking their points well. Shamrocks restarted their scoring on the 34th minute with a point from play. Within the space of six minutes, the visitors took over and added a trio of points, including one two-pointer, to take the lead. From this point in the game and aided with the breeze, the opposition never looked back as they used the game as target practice, adding a smattering of points and two goals. O’Donovan and Sean Clinton momentarily broke the opposition’s stride late in the game, but the men in white and green finished with intent as they fired home their fifth goal of the game to seal a comfortable win.
