Division 1 ACFL Round 1
Caulry 0-9
Moate 1-7
It was a game of two halves in the park on a sunny but blustery Sunday morning last when our seniors hosted Moate for the opening round of this year’s Division 1 ACFL.
It was our neighbours who played all the football in the first half, aided by the strong breeze blowing right down the centre of the field. Moate tagged on an early trio of points from play (the third of which could have been a goal) to take the lead. Our first attack proved fruitless as it fell out wide before the white and black side added another, this from a free after fifteen minutes. The opposition added the game’s first two pointer then before our lads eventually got off the mark; Shane Lawless finishing with a point after making an angle for himself. Our lads were dealt a blow though a couple of minutes later as Moate fired home a goal to lead by eight at the break.
It was as though the teams traded places in the second half as it was our lads who done all the scoring while the opposition struggled to come to terms with the elements. Oisín Shortall and Lawless both added points from play before the end of the third quarter. Liam Malynn converted a free then as another point from Lawless and super two-point from substitute Stephen Connolly put just two points between the sides. Our lads were given a fighting chance then as Malynn converted a two-point free to draw level with just three minutes of normal time remaining. As this point in the game, both teams were frantic for a win and eager not to share the spoils. Both sides had chances to go ahead, but ultimately, it was Moate who bore the fruits of their labour as a late converted-free enabled them to escape with the narrow win.
