Girls’ U16 Division 2 League Final
Caulry 5-10
St. Joseph’s 5-5
Our U16 girls were crowned Division 2 League champions after a hard fought battle over St. Joseph’s in wet and miserable conditions on Saturday evening last.
St. Joseph’s, playing with the win at their backs in this opening half, registered early scores with ease as by the 7th minute they tallied 1-2. Eimear Allen opened our scoring account on the 12th minute with a point, although the goal was on. Instead, Caulry had to wait for another three minutes for our first green flag of the game; this came from the boot of Erin O’Faolain after Lilly Ledwith’s initial effort was saved. St. Joseph’s weren’t long about settling proceedings down then as they added 1-2 to put six points between the sides. A converted-free by Ledwith was cancelled out up the other end of the field then. By the time the referee signalled for halftime, our girls only trailed by one after O’Faolain’s duo of scores; firstly, she added a point after making a good stride forward and then she fired home a goal after combining nicely with Ledwith.
O’Faolain’s pojnt from play straight after the restart levelled the sides. Our girls then momentarily went in front after Roisin Mulvihill put her name on the scoresheet. However, the concession of a goal saw Caulry on the back foot once again by the 37th minute. Ledwith narrowed the gap with her 39th minute point. But another St. Joseph’s goal winded their lead to four. At this point in the game, the tide began to turn in our favour as Caulry owned most of the possession. Our girls were patient up front as Ledwith (with two) and O’Faolain’s points chipping away at the deficit. A couple of goal chances for both sides went astray before Sarah Dungan eventually found the net on the 52nd minute to put Caulry in front, only for the second time in the game. Now with a dangerous two-point lead, our girls had to dig deep. Good defending from Emma Allen O’Loughlin and Kate Corcoran forced St. Joseph’s to kick a wide. On the 56th minute, Ledwith sent in a dangerous ball on top of the opposition’s goalie, and after a fumble, it fell into the back of the net and gave Caulry a well-needed five point cushion. Eimear Allen was fouled up front in the next sequence of play, resulting in a penalty which Ledwith dutifully converted. St. Joseph’s managed one more attack deep into injury time which resulted in a goal but ultimately, our girls had done enough to secure the Division 2 League title. Well done to the girls and their coaches.
