Boys' U14 League Round 1
Caulry 2-7
Millmore Gaels 5-13
Our U14 boys were defeated by a strong Millmore Gaels side when they hosted the Milltown-Ballymore amalgamation team for Round 1 of this year’s league in the park on Wednesday evening last.
Our boys owned lots of the possession in the opening few minutes with multiple scoring chances; one of which was tapped over the bar by Adam Ledwith on the 3rd minute. Millmore Gaels got off the mark five minutes later when we were penalised for disobeying the 4 up rule and their free-taker dutifully converted. The opposition added another point within seconds then as they pounced on the resulting kickout. Gavin Hennessey drew level with his 11th minute effort. However, the tide then turned against our boys as a well-taken penalty gave Millmore a three-point advantage. Three further points for the opposition preceded our next score of the game which came from the boot of Sean Maguire on the 26th minute. The last couple of minutes of the half proved to be vital as the opposition further stretched their lead with two more goals (one from play having worked the ball down the field and the second a penalty, despite the best efforts of Devon Martin in goal).
Despite being on the back foot throughout the second half, our boys never gave up. Caulry matched Millmore Gaels’ scores in the resuming five minutes with Robert O’Dowd on target. Cillian Moran managed to sneak a goal on the 38th minute from a free to further reduce the gap. The visitors followed this up well with two points (one a free and one from play), before O’Dowd registered our second goal after a superb whole-team effort. Joe Carrol and Ledwith added late scores, these interwoven between a smattering of Millmore Gaels scores, as ultimately, the opposition ran out winners on the evening.
Team & Scorers: Devon Martin, Rory Hassen, Kyle Mason, Charlie Buckley, Joe Walsh, Sean McGuire (0-1), Shea Ledwith, Senan Hatton, Robert O’Dowd (1-2), Daniel Casey, Zach Buckley, Adam Ledwith (0-2, 1f), Joe Carroll (0-1), Cillian Moran (1-0), Gavin Hennesey (0-1)
Ladies Division 2 League Round 2
Caulry 4-6
Athlone 1-13
It was a tale of two halves in the park on a wet and windy Saturday afternoon last when Caulry and Athlone ladies met for their second round of this year’s league.
Caulry were first to launch an attack which trickled out wide before Athlone put themselves in front with two points from play. Lauren White reduced the gap then on the 4th minute with her score from play. Playing with the strong breeze at their backs, Athlone owned a lot of the first half possession, but luckily from a Caulry point of view, the conditions made scoring hard as the girls in blue and white could only convert three of their seven chances to lead by four by the end of the opening ten minutes. Two well taken points from Leah Hallissy then halved the deficit. But just as it seemed like our girls were coming to terms with the conditions, the opposition hit a purple patch which yielded 0-5 in as many minutes. Just before the interval, Hallissy added a point and Aine Gaynor registered a goal as Caulry retreated to the dug out four points behind.
Our girls had a slightly easier task in the second half, playing with the conditions in their favour and it didn’t take them long to reap the rewards as by the 36th minute, Caulry were in the lead; Hallissy and Gaynor added points between a trio of well-taken goals from Jasmine Maloney (Katie Killane and Hallisy combing to set this score up), Hallisy (chipped the keeper with a high ball in) and Molly Connaughton (from the kickout and as a result of a great team effort). Not alone were our forwards now on form, but the Caulry backline defended tenaciously, forcing Athlone to kick a wide at their first time of asking in the second half. The opposition did, however, manage to sneak a super goal on the 42nd minute when their forward booted the ball over her own shoulder and dropped the ball into the top, left corner of the Caulry goal. A converted-free for the opposition reduced the gap back to three as the final quarter loomed. Pressure was high at this stage in the game with both teams in search of a win as wide after wide came flooding in. Rachel Maguire brought off a super save on the 54th minute to keep Caulry in the lead. Eventually, Athlone put an end to the scoring drought with another free on the 57th minute, leaving just two points separating the sides. Credit must be given to the Caulry defence as they stood strong in the remaining minutes of the game, withstanding the Athlone attack and escaping with the win.
Team & Scorers: Rachel Maguire, Susan Duignan, Ruth Martin, Anna Malone, Ciara Nally, Aishling Gaynor, Jasmine Maloney (1-0), Amy Murphy, Ella Corcoran, Ava Hallissy, Aine Gaynor (1-1), Katie Killane, Leah Hallisy (1-4), Molly Connaughton (1-0), Lauren White (0-1)
