Division 1 ACFL Round 3
Caulry 1-14
Moate 0-7
Our lads picked up their first brace of points of this year’s Division 1 ACFL with a comprehensive win over Moate in the park on Saturday afternoon last.
Caulry were helped into an early four point led courtesy of two placed-ball kicks both from outside the arc (Alan Malynn and Jack Connaughton the two shooters on target). Moate’s opening point of the game also came from a free, this on the 5th minute. Both sides missed scoring chances then with the next score of the game coming on the 13th minute from the boot of Neil Clinton. Our defence put immense pressure on the Moate forward line and one such example came on the quarter-hour mark when the visitors tagged on another wide. Points from Malynn and Luke Buckley stretched the Caulry lead to six then. Although we racked up a decent first half tally, it wasn’t without it missed opportunities as a myriad of chances went astray (including a goal chance created by Kevin Maguire which was ultimately saved). Moate were next to spilt the posts, again a converted-free. Malynn kicked a couple of two-pointed frees either side of a point from play by Buckley to widen the gap further between the sides. It was Moate who had the last say of the half with another converted-free to trail by 0-12 to 0-3 at the break.
The opposition came out all guns blazing in the second half, launching a trio of attacks, all of which were unsuccessful (one goal saved, one wide and one short). Rather it was Malynn who restarted the scoring from a free up the other end of the field on the 34th minute. It looked as though Caulry might run away with the game three minutes later when Sean Murphy fired home the first and only goal of the game (both Alan Daly and Ben Kenny being instrumental in this set up of play). However, Moate got a bit of a resurgence then, accounting for the next three scores (two frees and one two-pointer from play) to cut into the deficit. Malynn’s free on the 54th minute halted the visitors’ revival, and this transpired to be the final score of the game as the last few minutes became a tad disorganised with a smattering of shots for both sides going wide. Ultimately, our first half rally ensured we had done enough to get over the line and take the win.
Team & Scorers: Jack Connaughton (0-2, 1f, 1 2pt), Glen Carolan, Kevin Maguire, Tom Cloonan, Sean Clinton, Sean Murphy (1-0), Olan Healy, John Maguire, Stephen Connolly, Ben Kenny, Shane Lawless, Alan Daly, Luke Buckley (0-2), Neil Clinton (0-1), Alan Malynn (0-9, 5f, 3 2pt)

Division 7 ACFL Round 1
Caulry 1-13
Loughnavalley 1-10
Our third team had a good win over Loughnavalley in the park on a sunny Sunday morning last.
Loughnavalley started the game with intent as their forward snuck a goal in past our keeper on the 3rd minute. Brendan McCormack then kicked the first point of the game after making a good stride forward. Dean Burns gave Caulry the lead on the 7th minute when he raised the green flag after combining nicely with Aaron Hanevy. Nicky Killane added a point before Ruiari Casey sent over a two-pointer from a free after Rory Mullins was fouled. Loughnavalley drew a couple of scores back before the interval when they added 0-3 to Caulry’s 0-1 to trail by two at the break.
A trio of points from Brendan McCormack, Ernie Buckley and Killane further stretched the Caulry lead in the opening stages of the second half. However, despite this promising started, the men in green and yellow kept themselves in the game, rattling off five unanswered points to leave it level pegging at the end of the third quarter. McCormack’s 47th minute point from play was cancelled out up the other end of the field then. Johnny Buckley gave Caulry the lead once again on the 52nd minute. Further scores from Killane, Johnny and Burns widened the margins between the sides. Loughnavalley tapped over a late free, but ultimately, our lads had done enough to come away with the win.
Team & Scorers: Ruiari Casey (0-2, 1 2pt, 1f), Ciaran Allen, Johnny Buckley (0-2), Jack O’Meara, Ian Malynn, Ernie Buckley (0-1), Sylvester Coughlan, Mark Fitzpatrick, David Gaynor, Rory Mullins, Brendan McCormack (0-3), Dean Burns (1-1), Aaron Hanevy, Nicky Killane (0-4, 2f), Paddy McMahon
