Division 2 ACFL Final
Caulry 2-10
Garrycastle 3-11
Our seniors were defeated by neighbours Garrycastle when the sides clashed last Sunday evening in the Division 2 ACFL final.
The game had an entertaining start with both sides sharing two points inside the opening 60 seconds; Aaron Roarke opened the scoring account on the 20th second before Garrycastle levelled up their end of the field. The opposition then registered their second point of the game after pouncing on a poor Caulry kickout, but a fine point from Emmet Nally had the sides on par once again by the 3rd minute. Garrycastle momentarily stretched their lead to two then with a point from play and one from a free. But this was short-lived after Nally fired home a penalty on the 9th minute. The game continued on a tit-for-tat basis as sides overturned this one-point advantage was overturned in the opposition’s favour then courtesy of two points. A converted-free from Senan Baker made it level pegging once again on the 23rd minute. Stephen Connolly won the following kickout as he set Sean Clinton up for a score seconds later. Our lads had a number of chances late in the half, but only managed to convert one of these with Connolly on target leaving the scoreboard reading 1-5 to 0-6 at the break.
Garrycastle were first off the mark in the second half, but points from Alan Malynn and Conor McCormack soon had Caulry three points the good. However, things took a turn for the worst then from our point of view as a series of unfortunate events saw the men in green and red launch into a lead, having added an unanswered 3-2 between the 34th and 50th minutes. During this period as the opposition capitalised on our mistakes, every advance for Caulry fell everywhere but on target. A point from Kevin Maguire on the 52nd minute broke the Garrycastle stride. The sides shared a point each then before Alan Malynn fired home a goal on the 56th minute thanks to good work from Connolly and Harry Stuart Trainor. This score left just four points between the sides but it wasn’t to be our day as a series of chances fell astray. Connolly temporarily brought the gap back to three but Garrycastle finished with a point to run out worthy winners.
