Division 4 ACFL
Caulry 3-12
Garrycastle 1-15
Our Division 4 ACFL team stumbled over the line when they travelled to Garrycastle on Tuesday evening last for their latest league fixture.
Caulry got off to a good started with a couple of points from Alan Lynam and Liam Malynn. The homeside soon had it all square by the 6th minute with their opening points of the game. Malynn proved to be instrumental throughout as the next three points came from him; first, he tapped over a straightforward free, then added another from play and finished with another free after Darren Browne was fouled. During this period, Cillian Nagle brought off a good save to deny the opposition. Their next score of the game came on the 16th minute to leave just two between the sides. Sean Murphy won the following kickout and he combined nicely with Oisín Shortall who tore up the field and finished with a goal. The sides shared four points before the halftime whistle to leave five points between the teams at the interval.
The tables turned somewhat in the second half with Garrycastle accounting for most of the scores. A free from Malynn momentarily stretched our lead to six on the 33rd minute, but this was sliced in half minutes later when the homeside fired home a goal. Our lads responded well with points from Malynn and Alan Daly. The gap was widened to seven on the 41st minute when Browne rattled the back of the net thanks to good work outfield from Lynam and Will Buckley. To credit Garrycastle, they kept their composure as they replied with four points in quick succession to narrow the gap (one of which should have been a goal). A converted-free from Malynn was cancelled out in similar fashion at the other end of the field to leave a gap of just three points between the sides heading into the last ten minutes of play. At this point in the game, Caulry could do no right and they let the lead slip as Garrycastle, now playing nice direct football, reaped the rewards and went marginally ahead with four unanswered points. Now with our backs against the wall, super sub Luke Buckley made his presence felt when he drew on a cross-field ball and hit the back of the Garrycastle net. A point then in the same minute from the same man saw Caulry’s lead stretch to three. The homeside had one more chance to attack, but only gleaned a pointed-free from this opportunity as our lads escaped with the narrow win.

Division 2 ACFL
Caulry 1-12
St. Mary’s Rochfortbridge 2-13
Our Division 2 ACFL team came up short against St. Mary’s when they hosted the Rochfortbridge side in the park on a sunny Saturday evening last.
Our lads started the half well with Stephen Connolly opening the scoring account before Alan Malynn made himself an angle to put us two points the good. St. Mary’s registered their first score of the game on the 5th minute. However, a duo of pointed-frees from Conor McCormack stretched our lead once again. St. Mary’s, despite being wasteful up front in the first half, always kept in touching distance as they added another two points, one from play and one from a free. Further points from McCormack and Oisín Shortall were cancelled out at the other end of the field. The visitors then hit a purple patch in the last five minutes of the half; a couple of points put them marginally in front before a goal on the 30th minute gave the Rochfortbridge men a four-point advantage. Luke Buckley converted a late free to see the scoreboard reading 1-7 to 0-7 at the break.
The opposition raced out of the tracks with a goal in the early stages of the second half to leave our lads with an uphill battle. A Rochfortbridge point preceded a fine point from Colin Murphy on the 35th minute. Connolly then pounced on the resulting kickout, and he found Malynn with a pass; Malynn made no mistake in rounding a defender before pocketing a goal and suddenly it was game on as just three points separated the sides. McCormack booted over the next score of the game (this a fine, lone-range effort). Olan Healy combined nicely with Malynn as he finished with another point to leave the narrowest of margins between the sides. St. Mary’s then broke our stride on the 43rd minute when their no. 11 finished with a point. A converted-free minutes later had the gap widened once again to three. The sides shared four points in the last few minutes of the game as St. Mary’s dug deep to hang onto their dangerous lead. They tapped over a late point to win a on scoreline of 2-13 to 1-12.
