Division 4 ACFL
Caulry
1-11
Athlone 2-7
Our Division 4 ACFL team picked up their second consecutive win when they narrowly overcame Athlone in the park on a wet and windy Thursday evening last.
Athlone were first to launch an attack but this paid no dividends as it rattled back off the post. It set our lads up for the opening point of the game when Alan Malynn rounded off a burst forward from Oisín Shortall. Athlone then matched this score at the other end of the field. The sides were on level par throughout this opening third of the game and by the 18th minute, the scoreboard read 0-3 to 0-3 (our points coming from Malynn and Sean Murphy). At this stage in the game, our lads came alight. Goal chances from Murphy and Adam Donoghue seemed to get Caulry going despite not being on target as two points from the Malynn brothers edged Caulry in front. Colin Murphy then gave us a five-point cushion heading into the break after he found the back of the Athlone net on the 28th minute.
The opposition came out with a fire in their belly in the second half as they accounted for the first two points. Liam Malynn added one for Caulry, but the men in blue and white done similar at their end of the field to narrow the gap to three. On the 35th minute, the opposition scuppered a goal chance, but they done better seven minute later at the second time of asking when they fired home the equalising goal and making it game-on heading into the final quarter. Alan Malynn somewhat broke the opposition’s stride when he fired over a superb point. But true to form, the visitors raced down the field and levelled once again. Murphy kicked the next point of the game to edge our noses in front. But the scoreline was shortly overturned in Athlone’s favour when they converted a penalty with just nine minutes remaining. Liam Malynn kept his cool on the 55th minute as he converted a free to make it a one-point game. The Caulry lads dug deep and Shortall found space to kick the equalising score just as full time elapsed. The referee gave the sides one remaining chance, and credit to the hardworking Caulry defence, an Athlone attack broke down enabling our lads to build an attack via Sean O’Neill who split the posts to let Caulry escape with the win on the evening.

Minor League

Caulry vs. Athlone
Caulry 2-15
Athlone 4-9
Caulry and Athlone served up an entertaining hour of football when the sides met for this Division 2 minor league fixture in Pairc Chiaráin on Friday evening last.
The homeside burst out of the tracks and rattled in a goal just 25 seconds after throw-in. Rory Hatton then kicked our first point of the game. However, our lads were left with an uphill battle after a duo of points and converted penalty gave Athlone a seven-point cushion just five minutes into the game. A superb catch from Dean Martin at midfield enable Hatton to register his second point on the 6th minute. But this was closely followed by a duo of Athlone points at the other end of the field. The sides then traded a point each with Aaron Murphy on target for Caulry. Our lads played patches of fine football throughout, two such examples resulted in our next two points of the game. The first from Cody Parker who found space amongst the Athlone defence and fired over a point before Simon O’Grady done similar having availed of the mark. Hatton was unlucky on the 16th minute when his goal shot was sent out for a ‘45’. This placed-ball fell short and what should have been a Caulry goal resulted in a three-pointer for the boys in blue and white as they raced down the field and registered their hattrick. Our lads made a slight comeback with Murphy the main catalyst. First, he added two points (one from a free after Martin was fouled and the second thanks to good fielding from David Gaynor). Then, he combined with Gaynor before finding the back of the Athlone net on the 22nd minute. Athlone kicked the remaining two scores of the half to lead 3-7 to 1-8 at the interval.
Scores were slower to come by in the resuming minutes of the second half with the teams trading converted-frees early on. A trio of points from Kyle Rainey, Parker and Hatton had the deficit reduced to two by the 48th minute. Athlone kicked their second score of the half at this point in the game leaving three points the margin once again. A foul was committed up front and Murphy stood up to take it. Being about 20 yards out and with just two on the Athlone line, Murphy seized the opportunity and shot low and left to level the game much to the surprise of all around. Caulry edged in front momentarily when Parker added a point after Hatton read the Athlone kickout well. However, the opposition weren’t going to lie down as they fired in a dangerous ball which dropped into the back of the Caulry net, meaning our lads had it all to do with just eight minutes left. Hatton and Daniel Lynam combined outfield to set Dean Burns up for a point to leave the narrowest of margins between the sides. Both teams were hungry for a result as evidenced in the closing stages of the half when our lads had several goal chances well blocked down by the hardworking Athlone defence. Hatton eventually found the uprights, kicking the equalising point just in the nick of time meaning the teams had to settle for a share of the spoils on this occasion.
Team & Scorers: John Paul, Darragh Shortall, Cormac Murphy, Luke Nolan, Daniel Lynam, Rory Hatton (0-4, 1f), Cody Parker (0-3) Dean Martin, David Gaynor, Kyle Rainey (0-1), Lee Corcoran (0-1), Aaron Hanevy, Simon O’Grady (0-1, 1m), Aaron Murphy (2-4, 2f), Cian Malone

Caulry vs. Miltownpass
Caulry 3-8
Miltownpass 3-7
Our minors hosted Miltownpass in the park on Sunday morning last for their third round of the league.
Caulry hit the ground running and raced into a six-point lead; Lee Corcoran got Caulry going when he chipped the keeper to register the first goal of the game before he added the first point of game on the 4th minute. Further points from Aaron Murphy and Dean Martin then preceded the opposition’s first score which came from a free. Cody Parker cancelled this out at the other end of the field. However, Miltownpass drew the deficit back to two with their 21st minute goal. Parker added his second before the teams traded goals with Corcoran on target for Caulry after combining well with Kyle Rainey. Late points courtesy of Corcoran saw Caulry lead 2-7 to 2-2 at halftime.
Miltownpass took over the in the second half, playing with the strong breeze now in their favour. They pointed one minute after the resumption of play. Cian Malone fired in a goal on the 35th minute to widen the gap to seven, which in hindsight proved to be a vital score as Caulry wouldn’t register another until fulltime. As our forwards now struggled against the breeze, the Miltownpass boys used it to their advantage as they tagged on four unanswered points. The equalising score then came on the 55th minute when the opposition punished our errors and rattled the back of the Caulry net for a third time. In fairness to the Caulry lads, they showed good spirit and fought hard for a score in the closing stages of the game; it eventually coming in the form of a free from Rory Hatton. Miltownpass were given one more chance to attack but it paid no dividends as Caulry escaped with the win.

Division 2 ACFL
Caulry 2-9
Tubberclair 0-10
Our Division 2 ACFL team picked up another win when they made the journey to Tubberclair on a blustery Saturday evening last.
Our lads had two points notched up before the homeside opened their scoring account on the 8th minute from a free. Caulry’s scores came courtesy of Sean Clinton in the opening minute of the game and Aaron Roarke after a Tubberclair kickout trailed out over the sideline. A pair of converted-frees from Alan Malynn sandwiched another Roarke point to give our lads a four-point lead. Tubberclair’s second score of the game and last score of the half followed on the 18th minute when their no.12 split the posts. However, our lads saw the half out well, adding 1-2 before the break; Emmet Nally kicked two fine points before Roarke pulled on a long ball in from Tiarnán O’Donovan to give Caulry an eight-point advantage at the interval.
The homeside started the second half with good intention and rattled over a trio of points to pull back the deficit somewhat. Roarke then put Caulry on the second half scoresheet with his effort of the 36th minute, but the opposition followed suit up their end of the field, adding two more points. The next three scores of the game came from converted-free with just one of these in our favour courtesy of Jack Connaughton. Tubberclair kept chipping away at the deficit and by the 59th minute, just two points separated the sides. Our lads then got lucky after an advance forward resulted in a goal; both John Maguire and Roarke had chances blocked down before the ball rebounded into the back of the Tubberclair net to ensure our lads the win.
Team & Scorers: Jack Connaughton (0-1, 1f), Darren Hynds, Tom Cloonan, Sean Clinton (0-1), Olan Healy, Colin Murphy, Sean Fox, Stephen Connolly, Tadgh Baker, Harry Stuart Trainor, Aaron Roarke (2-3), Neil Clinton, Tiarnán O’Donovan, Emmet Nally (0-2), Alan Malynn (0-2, 2f)
