Division 4 ACFL
Caulry 0-8
Shandonagh 0-14
Our Division 4 ACFL team started off their league campaign with a defeat to Shandonagh in the park on Sunday morning last. A minute’s silence was observed prior to throw-in for the late Jimmy Fallon, Moyvoughley and Helen Shortall, Carn Park.
Playing with the breeze in their favour during the first half, it was Shandonagh who came by scores quicker than Caulry as they added a trio of points within the opening six minutes. Our first point of the game came from the boot of Sean Murphy, but this was closely followed by another Shandonagh score. Cillian Nagle was put under pressure throughout the half as he brought off good blocks when needed. The sides shared four points before the half-time whistle. Glen Carolan added a score from play before Alan Malynn converted a ‘45’ to leave our lads trailing 0-7 to 0-4.
The opposition were once again first to get going in the second half with a converted-free. Alan Fitzpatrick drew this back on the 36th minute with his effort. This tit-for-tat pattern continue for much of the second half with each score being levelled at the other end of the field. Between the 37th and 49th minutes, the sides shared 0-4, with Malynn and Alan Lynam on target for Caulry. Adam Donoghue shot for a goal late in the game but to no avail as Caulry settled for a point courtesy of John Maguire. Two late Shandonagh scores saw them take the win with six points to spare.
