Division 2 ACFL
Caulry 4-10
Milltown 1-16
Our lads hit the ground running when they opened their Division 2 league account with a win over Milltown in the park on a wet and misty Saturday afternoon last.
Caulry missed early chances before the visitors opened the scoring account from play on the 3rd minute. Milltown then doubled their lead from a free minutes later. But all was level by the 8th minute courtesy of a pointed-free from Conor McCormack and well taken point from play from Emmet Nally. The opposition nosed in front once again with another point from play. However, the tide turned in our favour when Tiarnán O’Donovan struck lucky for a goal on the 12th minute as he rounded both keeper and defender to find the net. McCormack followed this up with his first from play to widen the gap to three. Milltown narrowed the deficit between the 14th and 20th minute as they outscored Caulry 0-4 to 0-1. A point from Stephen Connolly got our lads back on track. The resulting kickout went astray for the men in white and green as this set Luke Buckley up nicely as he rattled off our second goal of the game. The visitors weren’t going to lie down however, as they added 0-3 to Caulry’s 0-1 to trail by two at the break.
In a similar vein to the first half, some chances went wayward for Caulry before Milltown re-opened the scoring account. The sides then shared 0-4, with Buckley and Nally on target for us. The opposition hit a purple patch nearing the end of the third quarter as they added an unanswered 1-3 to overturn the scoreline in their favour. A point from Thomas Dunning steadied the ship somewhat on the 51st minute, but the Milltown men soon had their four-point lead reinstated as they worked the ball up the field and finished with a point from play. With pressure mounting, our lads dug deep and Oisín Shortall ignited a bit of hope on the 56th minute when he snook the ball into the back of the Milltown net. Seconds later Alan Malynn done similar to put Caulry back in front. Sean Fox capped off the scoring late into injury time to ensure our lads escaped with the win.
